I bought a Lumia 640 tonight from the O2 store, Now the box was sealed, its a rather big box, opened the box to find phone, battery and a USB cable, no headphones, no manual and not even a pay and go sim card, I didn't need the sim card anyway but thats not the point. The phone was also £10 more expensive than it was on the website, I assumed this was because of a £10 top up the usually add but as I say didn't even get a sim card

Just double checked before posting but yeah my iPhone 6 came with mains charger, usb cable and rather good headphones. Although my ears seem incompatible with "in ears" so I have a rather nice set of £40 Sennheisers. Proper headphones!

O2 have had a policy of removing chargers for a long time. They shouldn't remove anything else. This was to try and comply with the EU idea of reusing older chargers.

Many phones now come without headphones it seems. Maybe not a bad thing (they're usually crap) though.

O2 had a green policy introduced some time ago to have just a USB cable. Meanwhile, Motorola only bundles a USB cable with the Moto G and some other models.

It makes sense when you can either buy one separately, or just re-use an old one (people probably now have loads). Mind you, old ones may well be pretty poor in terms of output, like 500mAh or something pathetic, rather than 1, 1.5, 2, 2.1A or higher.

And eventually we'll need new ones that a) support QuickCharge/Turbo Charging and then a load of new cables for USB-C connectors!

Most high-end smartphones include earphones. The LG G4, iPhone 6/6 Plus, Xperia Z3, HTC One M9 and Samsung Galaxy S6 all include earphones.

They aren't fantastic quality but they're included nonetheless. If you want a cheap pair of earphones BTW, look up Xiaomi Pistons: they're phenomenal for the cost.

O2 are mad.
Perhaps this will be one of Cameron's concessions??
Hahahahaha

I disagree. I think it's logical or else people will end up with hundreds of adapters, which is wasteful.

I can never bloody find one when I need one so there must be a charger parallel universe that they are all getting sucked into or something.
By rights I should be swimming in the things, but no. I never have enough around the house.

And the ones that were supplied tended to be the lower-powered 1A/1.2A ones when a 2A charger is more generally useful for charging all your devices at their maximum capable rate. The one I got with my Lumia 820 compensates for being lower power though by folding flat for easy carrying in a small bag or pocket.

I disagree with that rule as I only ever have one charger and when I am finished with my handset I sell it with the charger. Maybe they should have the option of being able to request a charger for free but it isn't automatically included rather than charge you for it which defeats the purpose of doing it to be green and it's seen more like an excuse to make money!

And you know the best bit about this, when I connect the phone to the computer to charge I get a notification about not getting enough power and it will take a long time to charge and here is the best bit "Please use the manufacturers supplied charger" Same happened with an iPhone charger, only charger that seemed to give enough power was a nexus tablet charger

You can get a USB cable that allows more power to your phone via a USB port.

The computer just doesn't output the amperage needed, a wall charger outputs much more current typically.

Good cables are worth it, cheap ones often lose voltage which affects charging rate. Good chargers that output more power in amps are better, old chargers are often 500mA, if you are upgrading you often need a more powerful charger to do the fast charge.

That makes the fairly big assumption that they're all built to the same specification and quality level.

There are some fairly horrendous chargers and other small electronics being sold via eBay which should, for personal safety reasons, never be used.

Leaving out the manufacturer charger (and opening a manufacturer box) has to be fraud to the end user. I suspect O2 wasn't allowed to do this to Apple devices?

I never use the charger that comes with the phone anymore. I have an HTC Rapid Charger (supports Qualcomm 2.0) so I use that to charge every device I use, it will charge all of them as fast as possible and that should last me a good few years.

For the average person though, I suspect they sell the charger with the phone and then use the charger that comes with the new phone. So I don't really see O2's logic in removing the charger in an effort to encourage recycling.

I have about 6 chargers about the house, but they come in handy as it means people can charge their (android) phone in any room

That's what I've done when I've sold or traded in, or given away a handset, the charger for that handset went with it.

I would be very surprised if the European Commission doesn't choose USB Type-C to be the mandatory standard charging port for mobile devices throughout the EU.

Agree that the problem is people will end up buying £2 fire hazzard chargers so while the EU directive might notionally reduce landfill (doubtful as who throws away working chargers?) and instead people will likely buy cheap, poor performing, fire creating chargers from ebay instead.

So landfill might be reduced although not entirely sure how and manufacturers saving weight, packaging, expense of giving chargers with phones but instead housefires/deaths/phone damages increased due to use of shit chargers

Utterly stupid EU directive and more likley to be nothing more than cost cutting for manufacturers.

So many of these 'good ideas' are nothing more than box ticking exercises for governments.....

My Moto E (first edition) came with a USB lead and that was it. I wasn't fussed.

Maybe I am not in tune with the modern world, but since smart phones need a full charge once a day or once every 2 days (best), I would have thought supplying the charger plug would be the only sensible thing to do.

Using chargers from other devices isn't always possible, due to varying designs or some sort of incompatibility.

Using 3rd party chargers puts in an at risk situation - is it safe, will it catch fire (there was 1 example of this in the last month near where i live), will it damage the phone....will it void the warranty?

Plugging into a PC means you actually have to be near your PC, switch it on, software updates, all just to charge a phone. Seems a bit silly to me.
Also....my iPad mini doesn't charge of the PC USB port - only data transfer. I have to use the provided mains adaptor to charge it.

I recently bought a regular phone on O2 and that did come with its own charger.
