Electronic shops haven't stocked them in a long time. I have had a Toshiba one for 6 or 7 years and I'm always afraid that when it dies I won't be able to get another ..

Panasonic still do DVD recorders, they only do a couple of models.

Toshiba might still do their DVD/VCR/HDD combi recorder.

Apart from ebay that's about it I think.

As far as I'm aware Toshiba just 'bought and badged them', originally from Samsung (who of course stopped making them a while ago now).

But really the day of the DVD recorder is long gone.

Not aware of the background, just that I got a hit on what looks like a current model on Toshiba's Web site.

Yes, DVD recorders are just about gone, hard drives and flash drives seem to be the in thing today.

Why? I use my panasonic dvd recorder regularly. Can you use flash memory to save things then?

Why? - simply because almost all manufacturers have long since stopped making them.

You're not supposed to be making long term pirate copies!

(or at least as long as recordable DVD's last)

The DMR-EX86 was the last model Panasonic did, but that dropped off their dealer ordering site about a month ago.
Not sure about other makes but not seen any for a while.
