So expect others to follow, I bet Plusnet will. Depedning oin how much you use the phone at weekends and evenings, paying yearly with plusnet may mean you lose more than you gain as they drop the free evening and weekends, which is not really free.

I was going to pay the line rental in bulk, because i do not even use my phone, so I am paying for something I do not even flipping use, once again.

Hardly "quietly" and as the article says
Meanwhile those paying full whack for Standard Line Rental won’t be left out for too much longer because BT usually announces a new range of price hikes around the end of summer, which the rest of the market then predictably follows.
Having had to reluctantly recontract for another 12 months after arranging my forthcoming house move with them I hope they do as it will give me an excuse to leave and go to a cheaper company.

Not only did I have to recontract I also lost the discount on my BB that should have lasted for the remaining 11 months of my 18 month contract.

I suppose someone has to pay for 'free' BT Sport , imposing an increase on TV customers clearly wouldn't raise enough but everyone has a landline.

I paid the equivalent of £13.75 a month when joining , the line rental saver has since gone up to £14.16 a month and will now increase to £15.29 a month.

No line = No fibre, so you do at least use the line.

It should be half the price to be honest if you do not put a phone on it.
Even Virgin does it cheaper with no phone, sure they put the price of the broadband up if you do not have a phone, but you still save around £6 a month. so is it not about time we had the same thing? I would not mind £6 or so a month knocked of the price i pay, just because I do not use the phone.

Because you aren't paying for the maintenance of the PSTN that you aren't using, only the physical line

That makes sense, I did not think of that. so yes half the price.

It will never happen as it is a big money spinning con, Even the so called free calls are not worth it, many people these days uses their mobile phones and I doubt they touch their home phone.

I normally use my mobile, but I still do have VoIP (sipgate) but the reason I have VoIP is to make it easier for my Dad and a couple of rinds of mine to ring me, also the hospital now also got the VoIP number, so now to get rid of it would be a pain.

It won't happen for most people because too many consumer grade ISPs are reliant on using the landline rental to let them have a cheap headline broadband price. TalkTalk are probably the most infamous example - £1 "unlimited" "broadband" in big letters with a mention of the mandatory £17 line rental or whatever it is, in the small print. I think about £5 or £6 of that will be to rent the physical line from BT, so the remaining £10 is going to be for TalkTalk's network - of which the ADSL and phone line run from the same equipment anyway

The ISPs that don't rely on every penny of landline revenue are the ones that don't require you to have the phone line with them, or raise the price a bit if you don't (e.g. Zen who charges £4 more a month if you don't have a Zen landline)

I believe Openreach is trialling FTTC service without a phone line, so it'll be interesting to see if that develops into anything useful

I don't think FTTC without a phone would be a huge saving. you would still need the copper cable, it just wouldn't have a dial tone so they would charge something for that.

You guys may or may not be aware, but since 2008 Plusnet has been owned by BT.

I have downloaded JDs Auto Speed Tester as I am questioning the speeds of my broadband. Apparently they (Open Reach) are upgrading the exchange in the village - will believe that when it gets my download speed back to 7 and upload speeds more than 0.3! Pigs might fly!
