I've got an iPhone 5S that is locked to Vodafone. I'd like to use it on Tesco Mobile so I'll need to get it unlocked.

Before I spend £20 + on unlocking it, would any kind person happen to have a Vodafone contract that they have had for more than a year, that I could use to unlock the iPhone? It won't cost you or me anything, as long as the contract has been held for more than a year.

If anybody could do this, I would be very grateful.

As far as I remember, the iPhone has to be associated with the account, so only the original account holder (or if you use it for a while on PAYG) can request an unlock. The IMEI is checked against the requesting account before its processed.

I used this service about year ago on my 5s to unlock it from vodafone and it worked a treat

also to note vodafone require the phone to be used on their network for it to be unlocked if the phone is new and you request a unlock direct from vodafone it will fail

Quite a coincidence, I used the same guy last year. He was really quick as well.

If I recall correctly, I bought the unlock on a Friday morning and I was quite surprised to get his email to say it was unlocked at about 8:30am on the Sunday.

You do realise this is probably someone working at Vodafone who is earning a ton of cash doing unlocks on the side? Personally, I wouldn't be funding his extravagant lifestyle.

If you have no other option, I doubt anyone even considers that

There really should be an official process for situations like this, but there isn't, short of selling the locked phone (for a lower price than you could otherwise get) and shelling out more for an unlocked one.

Better yet, the network operators could just sell unlocked phones from the beginning. There's no real reason not to (yes, you could sell the phone off and not pay, but it's not as if they repossess the thing anyway, they'll just take you to court/sell it to a debt collector/trash your credit)

Well you can go through Vodafone but they won't let me give them money, so I have no choice.

I think maybe Stig has Vodafone shares and thinks they have to pay so much tax they don't make much profit, he thinks they need every penny so as to be able to pay out bigger dividends, while the unlocker on eBay is a giant multinational conglomerate that makes huge profits, avoids UK tax, and should be avoided at all costs.

Or maybe I have it wrong .
