"there’s no vacancy in Doctor Who and given the way Peter is talking about it I don’t think there will be for a very long while."

Sounds like he may be trying to beat Tom Baker's record.

Reasonable 1st season from capaldi. Expecting him to grow into the role next season. Still early days for him. Got potential to be one of the better doctors.

I've always thought that Tom baker being associated with being the face generally most associated with the role (for older fans at least) is as much to do with the fact that he stayed in the role so long that people got so used to him being the doctor more than anyone else, and it was hard to forget that afterwards.

That being the case I do wonder that if a new who doctor equaled or broke that record, now. if they might not equally become the new most associated face being a long run nowadays and therefore in more recent memory in years to come.

Maybe the reason that the BBC have committed to Dr Who until 2020 is because Peter Capaldi has. Although, he'd have to go beyond that to beat Tom Baker's record.

First of all, no one's going to say Capaldi's on the way out. Even if he was going to announce he's leaving next week, the official line will always be that he's staying and it's all one big happy ship. Just like Christopher Eccleston appearing on interviews after he's already left the show, talking about how much he was looking forward to filming series 2, and the scripts were wonderful, etc.

Secondly, Capaldi has already 'been' Malcolm Tucker and isn't a 30 year old aspiring star. He's probably not as bothered as younger actors about going on to bigger and greater things. Therefore, he may well see this as the peak of his career and hold onto it for as long as he can.

Well as long as PC is in reasonable health & the Beeb doesn't play about with the production schedule, then that should not be a problem.

Paddy Ashdown mode;

If you can find any quotes from Eccleston saying that he was looking forward to filming Series 2 and that the scripts for that series were wonderful.....I'll eat my fez.

ETA: I remember the BBC breakfast interview with CE just prior to 'Rose' where the interviewer asks something like "If it's a success, are you in it for the long haul" and he says that he feels like he's already done it or some such. Obviously the show could've flopped, no one knew, but even at the time I thought....hmm. Ambivalent. It'll be on YouTube somewhere.

You dont think winning an Oscar was the peak of his career?

id love if PC did a long stint, maybe 7 or 8 years, peter has already had a long stint in acting and maybe see's DW as his reward as such for all those amazing roles that he's had and will just "retire" with Who and stay for the long haul

It was him! It was Eccleston who inspired the split series!

He wouldn't, actually. Tom's first episode aired on 28 December 1974, and he regenerated in March 1981 (that's six years and three months). Capaldi's first full episode aired on 23 August 2014, so if he's still in the role in November 2020, he'll overtake him.

I'd love PC to do 5 years, even 6 but I cant see him doing anymore than 4.

Usually when an actor says they plan to stay a long time their resignation is imminent!! This usually happens on other programmes or to keep secret PC is leaving at the end of the next series. Watch this space (and time)...

Peter left after Series 8 because he was exhausted and wasn't enjoying it, remember!

No! No one had a clue he'd won an Oscar in the dim and distant past, when he became the Doctor. This is the peak. Above Malcolm Tucker.

He's 57 and show business is cruel. Hartnell went on to... pantomime and a part appearance in one anniversary special which wasn't even an anniversary special in any way at the time. Just like Chris Evans's TFI Friday 20th anniversary special.

That's not the question. The question is, who will play Peter Capaldi's Doctor in the 60th anniversary? Because it won't be Richard Herring.

Or maybe the 70th then. Or 80th or whatever.

People tend to get roles off the back of Doctor Who these days. Plus, Capaldi is already a distinguished actor, so I doubt he'll be left in the dust whenever he leaves. Personally, I'd love him to break the mould; have a solid 5 Series run, rather than the 3 Series + Specials norm.

With the production teams "secret" eight year plan needing to slot filming a movie in somewhere and assuming they will want the movie to include PC then I suspect there will be at least one year when all we get is specials.

I suppose they could get (say) Idris on board as the 14th Doc and film the movie with him so it's ready for release the moment PC regenerates on the TV show - but it would seem a shame to rob PC that way.
