The Dan and Phil sim worked in a Y800z which was from EE not tested in any other mobile broadband devices. As all EE tariffs are hard capped with data they should have no reason to block the sims been used in a dongle/mifi unlike other providers which offer unlimited data such as Three UK or 'Giffgaff' which claims it does.... (But we won't go there)

I'm unsure if they are actively blocking the use of sim cards in devices other than a phone. I'll look into this right now and get back to you.

I haven't been able to test this sim card as it's asking to be topped up.

And i'm currently experimenting with a sim card which i ordered a few months ago from a network called 'GlobalGig' and i've been able to switch the APN to orange and it's let me use 5+GB without topping up once. It's interesting.... I haven't tried to completely hammer the network but i might see just how much data I can actually consume before it gets cut off.

I don't think EE has any active checking for tethering and nowhere does it state it restricts tethering. With relatively small data allowances (bar these rather bizarre limited edition SIMs) there's probably not real need to.

I think BT only restricts tethering to try and reduce usage, but as we all know there's no actual tethering detection in operation.

EE have never restricted it for the simple reason that usually you pay for what you use.
That has to be the best and easiest restrictions there is! : )
I wonder if these offers are not only good PR but also let EE test their network's ability to cope in a relatively controlled way.

What confuses me is how they can give away all these data downloads for next to nothing, yet ten quid will only buy you a small number of phone calls. Do you remember phone calls - that talking thing that people used to do on phones?

I do keep hoping it's some sort of clever trial to see how the network copes under increased demand, but it doesn't seem likely as it's not controlled enough.

The only way to do that would be to invite people to a trial, in more controlled conditions, where you knew where users were and used their phones most of the time.

It's especially odd when EE give examples of how to enjoy all the data, when it will then take away those privileges and bring you back down to earth with a bang.

I would doubt it, EE online promotions have always been online only in the past. Maybe order again, I ordered one on Wednestday night and it was delivered on Friday so it sounds like your order must have failed for some reason.

Well I decided to order one for myself. I topped up and the top was accepted but I am in a poor area so on a speed test I was getting 0 download and 0 upload. I managed to get onto a radio station for a few seconds and the phone updated the time via internet but that is all. Would I be able to pass it on to my friend instead of them getting one.

I'd accept a solution like some of our European neighbours are doing. A certain amount of 4g data followed by unlimited 3g. Keeps most people happy in my opinion.

Yes, that would suit me fine. And if you want full speed again then you buy more data.

Sadly some networks drop to 2G speeds, which isn't quite so good.

Enough people are signing up for their existing tariffs to continue to grow their subscription figures, and even their social network has people saying how wonderful and fast their 500MB / 1GB / 5GB is, and how happy they are. For a business, it would make no sense to give away more resources or lower the prices for those resources when the majority are happy with what they are already offered / getting and new customers are still flocking to them.

They removed their double data promotion a few months ago and there doesn't even seem to be any move to repeat it, and why would they when customers are subscribing to 5GB for £27.99 a month, regardless of the fact that five months ago, they would have got 10GB for exactly the same price, during the promotion. Its only an assumption but I suspect EE have possibly found that they still get a similar number of new customers signing for £27.99 / 5GB as they did for £27.99 / 10GB if numbers had dropped significantly, I guess the promotion would have been extended or reintroduced, but it hasn't.

In respect of Mobile Broadband, then what competition have they got?, especially now that Three no longer offer unlimited tethering. Non that I can see, other than ID Network, but even 20GB isn't that much competition in real terms, and I suspect that will only be a short term promotion.

The best that we can hope for is that their desire to boast about how fast and reliable their network is, leads them to continue to offer these 100GB x 2 promotions a couple of times a year.

Yep thats the one, ID Mobile, ID Network something like that. - but yes its Three in drag.

They (ID) offer 20GB on a data only tariff for £20 a month which can be used in a Mi-Fi / Dongle etc as is, however they do offer the ability to add minutes and texts as an 'add on' to that Data SIM so you should be able to put the sim in a phone and tether upto the 20GB but also get minutes and texts, if you select and buy the add on(s).

This is the best deal i've found for a Data only MBB sim which also gives the option of 20GB worth of handset data inc tethering along with the ability to add minutes and texts as required, although if you do use a lot of mins / texts it can get expensive. 20GB Data plus 500 minutes and 500 texts would cost £33.50 for example. But its good value for those who use a lot of data but only need a few hundred minutes and texts.

let me expand my question, I have ordered one, I want it for the 100gb alone. It will come this week. Do I need to register the sim before end of month?

If I do, will the 100gb be for this month then next month only? be a shame to waste 100gb on a few days.. or can the sim be ordered now and the data be added from next month?

No, you have 14 days in which to register the sim (Just put it in a device and use data to register / activate it as the sim comes with 50mb of Free Data loaded).. Then you will need to top it up with £10 and send a text to 150 to get the free 201gb allowance added (instructions are with the SIM)

So you have nothing to lose by waiting until June 1st to use it and top it up to get the allowance.

Doesn't matter, I had multiple Dan & Phils and have now got this one.
