Unless you have one for work I don't see why you would need a dual sim phone?
Am I missing something?

If you live somewhere like I do where VOD/O2 are superior for 2G coverage but have virtually zero 3/4G it makes a lot of sense. I have my main number on VOD and an EE sim for data.

I have my own and work SIMs in mine to save carrying two phones around. As with Steve though, my own number is on O2 and has the best 2G coverage here and the work on is on EE so I use the data on that.

Roaming.

If you live near a border between two countries (e.g. US and Canada) and regularly travel between them, it's cheaper to have a US and a Canadian SIM and switch over, without needing two phones.

Ditto mainland Europe, or the NI/IE border etc

The only downside is that many of these dual SIM phones might be 4G for one SIM but only 2G for the other

Most are. My initial idea was to get a Sure Signal as we get little reception in the house but realised this would only work if I had the VOD sim in slot 1 which kind of defeats the object. Not sure if there are any that can do 3/4G on both sims.

I use mine when traveling. I spend a lot of time working in Kenya, it means I can leave my UK SIM in the phone as well as a local one. This is particularly valuable when using two factor identification, or when banks etc. need to send a text message to the mobile they have on record.
