I don't really get the fuss about the eggs. The twins are more mature and presumably health conscious so they'll know that an omelette will stave off your hunger far longer than a small slice of something sugary. If they were a bit brusque about it, then big wow. Most people are grumpy when they're hungover, tired and hungry.

I don't much like Jade but she's almost singlehandedly keeping me watching. And yes, in a bland house she'll end up being treated by viewers as Hannibal Lector whereas last year, she may have paled into insignificance or even seemed like a breath of fresh air.

I think the first BB is boring, whenever I look back. Even the 'confrontation' with Nick is dull. Most of the HMs aren't very interesting either.

The usual theory about finding the old BBs dull is that it's because of wanting arguments and divisions and continual "drama"; and maybe that is the explanation in some cases. But I don't think it is in mine. I find the nastiness, conflict and "drama" irritating and unpleasant, rather than good tv. Many of the so-called "big characters" make the show worse for me, rather than better.

I think that, with many people, BB1 was interesting because it new and because there was a growing "buzz" about it, which made it fun to get involved by watching and talking about it. Those factors are absent when watching again, years later.

But also, people watched differently back then. Partly because of the live feed, but also because BB showed more of general life in the house, viewers could see more of the HMs daily lives than they'd see of anyone except those closest to them that they also lived with. You could could be looking out of the mirror as a HM washed up or brushed their teeth in the morning; on the live feed, you could even watch them sleep.

That had powerful psychological effects, especially since we hadn't evolved in or experienced an environment in which which we could see even private or intimate moments of the lives of strangers miles away from us. Housemates therefore could affect viewers in some ways that normally happen only with people they know and are close to. Thus viewers could become much more emotionally involved then they normally would when watching tv; and that added a sense of depth to the show and to the housemates.

The way BB is shown now in the highlights is much more distancing. A lot of it is taken up by tasks or other activities instigated or shaped by BB. The "coming up" and "previously" and the departures from chronological order can be distancing too, as can watching recordings of episodes from years ago. Also we're much more used to BB and to "reality" shows by now.

So while I agree with many of the points Scarlet and others have made about the bb16 HMs compared to ones from the past, I also think the perception of greater 'depth' in HMs in the past was partly due to the things I described above rather than to differences in the housemates.

I couldn't have put it better myself. I'm trying to stick with this series but I'm actually finding it a chore rather than a pleasure.

I don't know if it's because they're all so young, but I feel that this might be the first series that I've ever given up on.
