Has anyone else noticed voice calls on O2 to other O2 Mobs sound like they are HD?

I see a big issue 'Both you and the person you’re speaking to need to be in a 3G area, to be able to make HD Voice calls. Sometimes during a call you might notice a change in the audio quality, this will be if one of you has lost your 3G signal.'

I think that's the same caveat as the other networks, although I guess you're referring to the lack of 3G coverage.

I think it was either Vodafone or O2 who said they had no plans to do it, not too long ago. They must have changed their mind

I'm sure vodafone have had it for a while, o2 was the only one left out - I've definitely had some HD sounding calls on my vodafone work mobile

Will it only work on the phones O2 listed or will it work on others too (I use a Moto X and a OnePlus One as two of my phones)? Does it work on MVNOs like Tesco Mobile?

I remember it being o2. Looks as though they realised that customers might want to be able to hear the person on the end of the line. They were using a reduced bitrate codec on 2g at some point though weren't they (I'm not too clued up but was it something like half rate codec?)

OnePlus supports HD voice (at least on EE) had quite a few of them on mine.

I don't think I've ever actually listened to an HD Voice call in my life.

You'll know the first time you experience it. Its quite dramatic. You need good 3G at both ends and for it to remain stable during the call.

To be properly useful in the UK it needs to be cross network. Its not very often I'm calling people on the same network as me.

What about cross network HD voice?
This has been in the off since Orange was the first network to debut it in 2010 (maybe later?).

I have never understood what the hold up has been, surely its in the networks interest to provide the latest features that cross compatible?

Mind I say all of this, I don't find HD voice that good, its pitch or tone feels very sharp in my ear, I much prefer the none HD variant. Luckily on Vodafone and EE voice quality is great regardless of HD voice.

I experienced it for the first time today. I use Three for my primary network but at the moment I've switched to EE because of their 100GB sim. I got a phone call from someone who's on Virgin Mobile (EE MVNO) and it was crystal clear, like I was on a skype call.

If only this worked cross network.

Indeed. MBNL is working on it.

No doubt VO2 are too. I doubt MBNL to VO2 will happen anytime soon.

Soon i won't be able to tell that friends or callers on radio call-ins are on O2... yay!

It's very surreal the first time you get one, but you'll know

EDIT: I know it wasn't HD voice but I was talking to the other half who is on o2 the other day and I noticed the quality was way better than usual, normally I have trouble hearing her because the quality is so bad, I guess if they've enabled HD voice they've upped the codec bitrate on normal calls too?

Also, does anyone know if HD voice will be available over tugo, like it is on EE's wifi calling?

Do you require the o2 firmware for this to work?

It should just work if both callers are on 3G and both have compatible phones, no need for any specific firmware.

Can confirm this. EE and Three will be the first two companies to launch cross network HD Voice between each other.

Why do I keep reading that Android 5.1 is the first release of Android to support HD Voice?

5.1 is the first android release which natively supports VoLTE. As Verizon use CDMA, EVDO and LTE 5.1 was the first time nexus 6 users on Verizon had HD voice. Even T-Mobile USA devices like the nexus 5 have had HD voice since launch, so I don't know why Google and the press focused on HD voice, when the actual feature was VoLTE.
They don't even call it that in the menu, they call it advanced 4G mode or something strangely.

I expericed HD voice the other day. I thought i'd rung the Mrs via Facetime Audio by mistake as the quality was on par with that.
