Has anybody here noticed any channels on Sky disappearing? There has been a suggestion that Sky have been changing the power levels; would they do that on a Sunday??

Sounds more like Eutelsat 28a/b is having hicup! My receiver isn't a good gauge but ESPN HD, 11389V's power looks fairly significantly down, 2 db lower than most on Eutelsat for me and by far the weakest signal on 28.2E. Still zero BER, on my zone 2 dish. the same LNB on a zone 1 dish might be in marginal territory, poor weather will reek havok on a regular zone 1 dish.

It may have triggered the 2g transfer.

So are the affected channels all on the satellite that is due to be replaced? How long was the projected life of this satellite?

I wonder if they will be able to hurry it's replacement along.

I have an 80cm dish and I only get 57% on that on 11.389 H. Strange!

Can still receive the channels though but a Sky dish is not ideal - too small for uninterrupted reception!

yes, it was 11389H like jimbo said not V.

I'm not sure when the replacement is due but the eutelsat satellite has had power issues before. eutelsat abandoned 28e plans when astra won rights to use most of the frequencies.

Current estimations are 1deg/day so will be another 14 days potentially before it lands at 28E. Even then it's not simply a case of swapping from one to the other for some uplink providers as there's complications with current and planned uplink antennas for 2G's eventual use.

It does sound though that E28A is on its last legs!

Will Eutelsat 28A still have enough power to send herself to a graveyard orbit ?

With 'Sky 3D' due to close on the 9th June I'm wondering if Sky might consider sacrificing EPG 170 and reserving it for Local TV so you've got a block of three numbers (168, 169 & 170) for second, third and fourth Local TV's channels.

At the sametime Sky would obviously acquire EPG 216 which is currently reserved for Local TV along with 168 & 169.

I guess we'll see what happens on the 9th with the Sky Arts changes due to take place. I assume there'll be some kind of Sky channels reshuffle to fill the gaps left by Sky Arts 2 & Sky Arts 2 HD?

These are now correct, but left in the same order that you listed them (I assume you've listed them in the order in which they launched?).

As more Local TV channels launch it might be worth considering listing them in transponder order at some point so a transponder isn't listed twice in the list.

Yes, it must now be very close to retirement. It started to have power problems in August 2012, with Eutelsat moving another satellite to 28.5 as a precaution (http://www.a516digital.com/2012/08/eutelsat-redeploy-satellite-to-secure.html). They've done well to keep it running for another 3 years since then.

One of the uplink/carriage suppliers to 28A reported 'tracking degradation' (due to so far unknown cause) for about 4 hours from 1800 GMT on Sunday, until they managed to stabilise it.

That would have affected quite a few FTA channels on Sky.

Thanks. Looks like they've pushed it beyind it's lifespan, so they can hardly complain. I wonder if the channels affected will be looking for compensation.

Could this be the reason that ESPN HD went down during the Indy500?

Yes, ESPN HD is on Eutelsat 28A and would be affected by any fault.

Eutelsat 28B , which started life as W2M (this bird had a partial power failure) is now known as Eutelsat 48D/Afghansat 1 and operational at 48°E

So if the spare satellite has been taken away and the replacement is two weeks away, what's going to happen?

Is it just pot luck for a fortnight for ESPN HD etc?

I haven't heard of any problems with Virgin Media*, perhaps they get a direct feed and don't depend on the satellites.

*Apart from a music channel (Magic IIRC) on Sunday night. This channel went off throughout the country- maybe VM take this one from satellite- is this broadcast from the faulty craft?

Let's hope it doesn't set on fire or anything :o

I don't think it's clear (yet) whether the 28A problems on Sunday evening were problems with the satellite itself or with the uplinking dish and its ability to properly track it (or a combination of both).

It's maybe premature to assume that the already known gradual failing of 28A as it reaches and passes its design end of life have suddenly taken a turn for the worse.

Strathclyde - you mentioned that the first switchover is on 1 June at 0105 (is that GMT or BST)! and to which satellite will it switch to as 2G will not be in place?

BTW do you have a list of transponder changes and times and dates yet? Thanks
