I wonder if it's just the website or their internet service or more widespread?

Just wanted to check my credit as I have a spare sim of theirs with credit on it.

No, it's their whole service by the looks of it, sounds like the site has gone down due to the amount of people hitting it because the service is down.

I was wondering when they were going to have their next big outage. It was almost looking like O2 was becoming competent at running a network

Lol.

So the whole network has gone down then? Does it have servers that are controlled by Giff gaff or will it be O2 behind it all?

I'm not really sure about what's gone wrong, but O2 owns Giffgaff (and happens to provide the network) so I think it's right to blame them for any GG related trouble

Twitter etc suggests it's just the website

I just wondered how these virtual networks actually work. Do they have their own kit or is just very much the main networks kit being used, sold at wholesale rate sold to the virtual networks?

Maybe it is just the website, I went on to check my credit as I use it in my GSM alarm system. Last time I checked it had £40 credit, pressed the panic button on the alarm as part of the test I do from time to time and no SMS and call to my phone although the alarm is showing it as being connected to the network.

Giffgaff have their own MVNO infrastructure SMS servers and Internet break out that is separate to O2 it interconnects with O2 radio network but all the central stuff like billing, authorisation, pac code generation, SMS servers etc are part of Giffgaff. To keep costs low at the start most of it was full of spofs!

It looks like Fujitsu are involved in O2's UK and Ireland MVNO efforts: http://www.fujitsu.com/uk/Images/o2-ireland.pdf. You would think though that O2 could already do all this themselves

Mobile networks Only do a certain amount of back end work themselves, all of them outsource back end operations to some degree.

My kids' have GiffGaff on their mobiles and they're both working fine. Texts, calls, data all good. Perhaps just their website is down?

It's working after a restart, so it seems it got disconnected for some reason or didn't work when I tried it earlier.

The website is still down though, now displaying a 404 error.

My daughter has been texting her mate on EE and got a response so all seems ok with the network itself - at least down here in Middx.

Good news... It has been stable for a while now. Sounds like it was just the website and its good that I tested the alarm. The giffgaff sim is perfect for that as it is almost never used and it has to be 2G, plus as long as their uptime is reasonable I don't care.

So I thought I'd see if giffgaff had posted about why the website was down yesterday, but today the community pages and forums are all down...

Are they under attack?!

No data received
ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE

in Chrome for the forums.

I managed to log into the dashboard though.

It seems the community pages are hosted separately. Yesterday it was the main website that was down, but today it's the community pages and forum.

Back up now, maybe

Most Recent Update
14:00 - 25 May 2015

Looks like the fix wasn't as permanent as we thought. Expect some intermittent service of the community while we investigate and find a genuine permanent solution. No other services are impacted and work is ongoing to get this sorted ASAP.

Apologies again for the bother and mixed messages about if the issue is fixed or not.

Looks like the community is still down and some reports that parts of the network have gone in the last 30 minutes. No confirmation of how widespread. (So glad I left giffgaff)

Has anyone heard why they are having so many difficulties this weekend?

It sounds like the website and the community have been under a DDOS attack, as now they are reverse proxying their servers with a service called incapsula (which is giving a proxy error 20). Looking up the Incapsula website it says that they provide DDOS protection and they have a number in red text to call if you're under attack, presumably they can get it up and running quite quickly.

There were posts on their community saying that there was a DDOS too, so that would make sense, 2 days running with the main site and the community pages.

Yep sounds like this time the network is down as well so this time it sounds much worse. Have they hacked into the o2 network?

Remember GG has a lot of their own network servers too, lets hope our data is safe

Yes the network is down if you look at Twitter, or at least a lot of people reporting issues.
