So he was an awful Dad to Jason Grimshaw and then returned with this new loving Dad routine which seems genuine.

He is now scheming with Tracy Barlow against his girlfriend Liz McDonald who he is cheating on.

Then his random nastiness towards Zeedan Nazir and Simon Barlow.

You need to ask that question?

Forgive me but you cannot be a good judge of character even with the clues staring you in the face!

He's criminal, dodgy and doesn't trust other people with his feelings. He's a cheat in relationships. I wouldn't trust him as far I could throw him. He's selfish and just out for himself. Any good he does is ruined by the bad. Having said all that I really enjoy watching the character who is very well acted. His sexy scenes with Tracey and the heavy breathing around her look real which is the sign of a good actor. I like the way he looks at people depending on who, where and when. I've seen him in something else and think the actor is great at his craft.

Come to think of it he doesn't. He's too busy scheming with Tracey.

Maybe, like most people, he has many sides to his character. Surely you can decide for yourself what you think of him?

I like Tony. I'd have loved to see him and Tracey get the pub and chuck McMutton out on her arse

He's a criminal and a cheating, lying sleazeball with "a stupid shiny head".

Me to. Tracy and Janine Butcher/Ian Beale will never get The Rovers or The Vic! Such a shame.

Think he's always meant to be a bit of a dodgy character. At least, that's what it's seemed like to me.

He gave it to Jason and stopped interfering. Hes like a different man with his son and I dont think its safe. Picking on kids doesnt seem him. He made me laugh when he pretended tobe scarred of his mum aka Leanne but somehow he twisted it and said Tony meant his dead mum.

Terrence Maynard who plays him says that Tony is 'not a villain, more a lovable rogue'. I would say he is more an anti-hero character, very dodgy but not a ruthless villain. Ultimately he has some good points such as wanting to be a good father to Jason but overall he's a flawed man.

Exactly this. I think it's quite obvious how Tony is meant to be portrayed, but I find it really frustrating that soaps tend to be so black and white.

I find it even sadder that there's viewers who tend to want/need things to be so black and white.

I've said in another thread that Tony's character is going the same way as Owen's - alpha male brought down by a woman, but still trying to be true to himself - so acts in and out of character randomly from scene to scene.

The upshot is, the poor actor doesn't know what expression he should have on his face, and viewers don't know if we're meant to like, loathe or sympathise with him.

And as this is a soap, not serious drama - never mind real life! - yes, I'd say there does have to be some consistency in the characters. Play around with them only if you know what you're doing.

I like him. He's a far more convincing villain than Tracy with real motives and fitting actions. I think he can better written much better though and be integrated better into the Grimshaw family.

Was he a dad to Todd when they were kids?

I agree. It's as if they need to be told whose side to be on.

I could be wrong, but I suspect, from the look on his face occasionally, and the sceptical glances, that he's regretting what he's done. If so, then he's probably the best, and most subtle, actor in the cast.
