They've been teasing a big secret for the new Loveday family in Hollyoaks but it took them so long to start hinting at in the show.

After Simone and Louis' dinner with Ste and John Paul, at which they reacted to both the gay relationship and the question about whether Zack was their only child, I wondered if perhaps they had another child who they'd shunned for being gay, but now with the box of pictures and Simone hitting Zack I'm starting to wonder if it might be more sinister.

My other theories so far have been:

Perhaps in her drive to make a career for herself Simone neglected her children and this lead to the death of one of them (although this begs the question of where her husband was when this took place). I kind of hope it's not this as it gives off a bit of a 'working women shouldn't have babies' vibe, but it would make an interesting storyline.

Or she may have accidentally killed one of them herself. It feels to me like this isn't the first time she's hit Zack, especially the way they're hiding it from Louis and Zack's reaction when she tried to give him chocolate to make amends. Maybe she accidentally struck/shook a child too hard one day and killed them, then successfully passed it off as an accident.

Whatever it is, I'm about 98% sure Zack isn't their only child, and if there is another Loveday they are probably dead - though knowing soaps they won't be and will return for a SHOCKING TWIST!

I also think Louis is probably somewhat in the dark about this secret. Whatever happened, certainly if it involves Simone hitting their kid(s), I don't think he knows the whole story.

What do you guys think?

I think it probably is something to do with Simone and the death of a child due to neglect.

The gnome that hides the spare key is also meant to be a hint with the way Simone looked and Louis said 'still?'. Maybe something happened to the other kid because there was no-one to let them in the house, maybe Simone was meant to be there, and then after whatever happened they got the gnome to hide another key?

I think it's down to something that Simone did or didn't do, but it was a accident, that led to her other child's death.

It's definitely iffy, so many hints at what their secret could be, but I agree with your points.

Whatever it is I hope it isn't too far fetched, I really like them as a family

But then again, this is hollyoaks...

According to Sam on Tumblr, it's based on a news story from another country, and is something he's described as "sick" and "controversial" and that will cause accusations of the show "jumping the shark" (like that doesn't happen every week anyway!)

The first thing that comes to mind is something like the Fritzl story, but we've already had incest recently (and people PREFERRED the idea of Patrick being Nico's father to it being Dodger!) If it's something Simone did, it either has to be accidental or something that she could have got a light court sentence for; it doesn't seem that she spent time in jail (or if she did, she wasn't there long.)

The problem is that I just don't care enough to be bothered. With the exception of the dad (who I can just about tolerate) they are a terrible family without one redeeming feature. I find it very difficult to give a crap because of that.

Maybe they have another child who's older then Zach a brother or sister who's in jail for something.

That was my first thought, but would HOs actually go there? Surely the subject is too sensitive for a soap to create a storyline from it. They cancelled a child killing a child storyline and rewrote scenes because they already introduced the character a few years ago, because of the feedback when the story came out in a spoiler.

That's what I was thinking, chances are they would be shot down in an instant, especially considering, as you said the controversy and eventual cancellation of the Loretta storyline but I just got the feeling from the photos and Simone's reaction that it could be something like that

Whatever it is given its Kirkwood it'll involve a gay/lesbian affair. You know he can't resist shoving them in.

Agree 100%. Terrible family played by woeful actors IMO.

Maybe the exact details are a bit vague- they stretched the Blake secret out for ages.

It must involve another child as Zak said "I won't ever be enough for you, will I?"

HO can get away with a hell of a lot more than EE due to less focus on it day to day. I kind of want it to be this considering the slightest mention of Maddie usually bring the lock around here

I confess I have not been paying close attention, as I have little to no interest in them, but, since Simone used to be a solicitor and now she is a shopkeeper, I just assumed she was struck off for some kind of professional wrongdoing. Obviously, it would have to be something salacious, this being Hollyoaks.

Hollyoaks would probably keep quiet about any storyline that had real life connotations for fear of certain parents putting their ore in.

I think putting out the spare key and Louis saying 'Still?' suggests a missing son. Simone still puts the spare key out in the hope her son will return but Louis believes he's dead and they should move on.

Why he went missing may have something to do with Simone's past career. It just felt like she was expecting someone home when she mentioned putting the spare key out.

That could happen although Blessing was recently a missing person.

Could be that the child was involved in crime and she threw him out.
