Why do supermarkets use "British meat " in their pies when often you find it tough or chewy or have lumps of gristle or fat. When did you find any gristle or fat in tinned steak? Why don't they use that?

this is why i don't buy them..horrid meat..I make my own ( pasties Lol)..They are very tasty and know what's in them..

Those stake bakes are the same, grisly chewy meat,. yuck not to mention greasy and gets heart burn of the pastry

I doubt its got anything t o do with the fact it is British Beef, more to do with the maker/producer of the pies. I've had some crappy bits of beef in the so called beef capitals of the world, Argentina, Uruguay etc. Once passed through Fray Bentos, didnt see a single steak & kidney pie.
Thought I'd try a MacD's in Buenos Aires hoping the burgers would be better but no, same shite as here. Tried a couple of privately owned burger cafes though & they were brilliant.

I agree that it have nothing to do with being British beef, we have some of the best beef in the world. My Dad have a steak pie from a Butcher now and again and he loves it, expensive mind you, looking at nearly £3 for a small pie. but if he enjoys it then that is fine.

The problem with a lot of pies from supermarkets is I expect they use cheaper cuts of meat.

I got some mince beef and onion slices from our pound shop, a pound for two slices, I want the best beef in them.

To be honest they are not bad for the price,

Yes I understand that, but a 400g tin of stewed steak is £2 at Aldi £2.25 at morrisons at selling prices not buying prices, their pies are well less of 400g of meat, but can't do a pie for £2? With the same quality .... I don't understand....

I suspect there are economies of scale in tinned vs pies. Also a pie is more complex to make, it is more fragile and so difficult to transport and has a very short shelf life compared to a tin.
I don't eat tinned stew, but I suspect it could even be made cheaply abroad and shipped over - not something thats practical with pies.

I do quite fancy a steak 'n kidney pie now! Though they seem to be becoming rare beasts - don't think the young 'uns like the idea of kidney

Hi Shrike, yes it's tinned in Brazil and shipped over, , I'm not suggesting making the pie abroad, only putting it together here and adding the pastry locally . Having made a big argument for using tinned meant in pies tonight I had 2 Hollands steak and Guinness puddings and they were gorgeous!

I've had a Pukka Steak Pie for me tea for three days running and I've got another one for tomorrow,,,,,

I only eat them when they're on special offer which they are at Sainsbury this week

nice pies........deep pie, lots of meaty filling, not much gristle (I haven't noticed any) chunks of meat, nice gravy

I cut them up and put chilli sauce on.........yum !

Morrisons do a chunky steak pie and they have been very nice in the past with plenty of filling but I have to say I've been disappointed the last few times I've had one as I'm sure the meat content has been cut and it's not as tender as it has been previously.

Their frozen sausage roll are really nice, Morrisons used to sell them, but they stopped doing then a while back. Teswco don't sell them, or Sainsburys and I have no idea who else do.

Maybe Pukka stopped making them.

While they got to make more money somehow, the problem is doing this sort of thing will put people off and will not bother to go there.

You want to be buying your steak pies from independent butchers. In the words of the old saying, "Bakers sell pastry, butchers sell meat."

While I can't say that I've ever heard that saying before I do get some from local butchers and they are always top notch. (well, almost always).

I like to try different kinds of crust on them too but think my favourite is short pastry.

I only buy steak pies from the butchers now. It's impossible to get quality steak pie from the supermarket. I tried Bells previously and it was just fat and tough bits of meat.

A few months back, in fact last year, I was watching a pie being made at a butchers, it was a steak and kidney pie and this butcher makes them more or less on the shop floor. Seeing the meat they put in, I can understand why they cost so much.

Plus I think independent butchers need support!

Poor pastry can ruin a pie/pasty/sausage roll...

The label is a contradiction. meat free steak pie. Yeah, it should be Steak Style.

I am surprised they have not been done for misleading the public.
