Am I in the minority to have no interest in bettys departure what so ever? I found the character utterly boring and repetitive and did not even notice she was off screen? no criticism to the actress, just a really boring character

Not boring no, but not the icon either.

Betty's heyday was when she was with Seth to be fair, so I understand what you mean, but she was a long term character and was generally likeable, the older characters are always the mainstay of the cast and I think she'll be missed by quite a few viewers, but if you hadn't watched during her bigger storylines then I guess you'd barely notice she'd gone.

I've watched emmerdale for years and honestly can't recall her having any storylines apart from Seth dying

She wasn't really about storylines though. She was just always there gossiping and slapping people down with a well chosen one-liner. Being a prominent part of village life, or sometimes at home Poodling on Seth's computer
She was a 'character' and I don't mean just a soap character. She was a big part of the old, enjoyable Emmerdale, pre 2009.
She will definitely be missed by long term viewers. I didn't like Viv much, she infuriated me, but I miss her now and wish she could come back. She was worth ten of each of the new additions.

Viv was one of those silly hammy panto characters. I thought we'd seen the last of them but then the horrific Kerry arrives and lowers the standards again.

Exactly this ^^^^^ ! She was a prominent village gossip for her first years, got involved with Seth, had that non marriage (which was a hoot!) and continued to make Seth's life a misery. Betty was a contrast to the other more dramatic stories that were unfolding.

(I miss Viv too!)

I had no interest in Betty's departure either. I've never understood why so many people think she's so wonderful, I've always found her annoying. The only bit I liked of her departure was Seth mark 2!

I never liked Viv, she was another character I found annoying and I haven't missed her at all.

I think the only ones I like of the more elderly characters are Edna and Sandy.

Viv was only a panto character towards the end, if you watch her early years she was very different. Her most memorable storyline was her and Shirley Turners kidnap over the moors by Reg Dawson in 1994. Ohhhh those were the days!
