What a shame he left.

You should see him in his great years

He used to wind up Ivy, Elsie, Ida and Vera

That's a bit harsh. He was a perfectly decent soap level actor and the character was a great one. Back then there were hardly any duff characters in CS.

Johnny Briggs did many films before Corrie! He also starred in Crossroads as Diane's flashy boyfriend for a few months!

Plus the love triangle with him, Ken and Deirdre - one of the biggest Corrie storylines.

It's a real shame we've lost:

Jack, Vera, Mike, Blanche, Betty, Deirdre, Dennis, Hayley & more in the last decade or so.

I always liked Mike with Alma. They were great together, IMO.

SB getting rid of Dennis just shows he has no respect for the history. He refused to delve into what he had been doing all those years away.

I remember him in 633 Squadron & as one of the thugs picking on Norman Wisdom at the start of The Bulldog Breed

I liked him and I was happy to see a soap actor retire rather than be written out after death

I didn't like him. He was so gobby he just got on my nerves. I prefer modern day Corrie. I wonder what will happen to the factory when Carla leaves?

It's easy to forget how revolutionary a character Mike was in 1976; with his "brash London ways" he was pretty much unlike anything the show had seen before. And in the years when he was an active businessman he was great. But it's hard to see what today's show would have done with him if he were still around. They couldn't just have had endless scenes of he and Ken making cheap digs at each other

Indeed he was. My appreciation of Mike has only grown with time. He was a world away from today's big characters with all their dramas and crying scenes. Johnny Briggs might not have been the best actor but he played Mike with such charm that you couldn't help but root for him even when he was being a right b******. It's actually very hard to make a character like that not a straight-up villain, but Mike straddled that line for 30 years and was ultimately one of the good guys.

He was definitely axed, I assure you.

I disagree. Dave Smith was very much a forerunner to Mike. I wish they'd had a chance to meet - sparks would fly!

Really! I never knew that. I had assumed he would've been one of the untouchables. Do you know the logic behind it? Why did the creative team reach that decision?

John Fay came up with the Alzheimer's storyline at a long-term story conference and convinced the other writers that it was worth losing Mike to run it. It's detailed in the 50th anniversary book by Sean Egan.

Hank1234, I notice your article is from 2006 - very often the truth doesn't come out until a few years later. It's a similar situation to how we thought for years that Thelma Barlow quit because of Peter Baldwin being axed, when in fact Thelma quit first.
