The producers construct these sort of quiz shows so that the target audience can have the satisfaction of believing that for much of the time they are as intelligent, or more so, than the contestants. It's part of the appeal. Something like Uni Challenge wouldn't work in those time slots.
To achieve this, as well as reasonably intelligent people, they also have to recruit a number of dumb contestants. Some are apparently really dumb. But there again, sometimes on Uni Challenge, occasionally somebody can say something dumb, even Paxo. |

There was one on the recent series of Two Tribes.
Question: What fruit is used to make a Banoffee pie? Answer: Apples. Maybe not the most stupid answer ever, but it gave me belly laugh. |

Well JR was shot 35+ Years ago in Dallas, JFK was shot 50+ years ago in Dallas. Somebody of a certain age could very easily confuse the two especially these days.
The girl in question who gave the answer is early 20's. I'm shocked she even knew JR but it's clear to show that she knew more about soap opera history than real life history. It was a great answer, as Richard always says, better to have a stab at something than say nothing at all. |

I remember Bob Monkhouse telling a story about Family Fortunes:
Bob: Name something that's abandoned in winter. Contestant: My sister. |

Private Eye has this exact feature in every issue, titled Dumb Britain. That it can find the material every fortnight to make the column worth running is indicative of either Britain having too many idiots who freeze under pressure, or too many tv quiz shows. I'd suspect a mix of the two.
