This one irritated me the first time round and still irritates me on the repeats of The Link:

Question: "What EIGHT letter word is given to a chess move whereby a piece is given up in order to gain future advantage?"

Contestant 1: "CHECKMATE ...? Oh - it's not 8 letters"

Contestant 2: "SACRIFICE?"

So two of them managed to give an answer that didn't meet the length requirement specified ... the kicker here being that contestant 2's answer was accepted as correct!

Then in the same show, "What am I? I have 11 platforms ...[other clues pointing to London King's Cross station, which is accepted as the answer]" King's Cross has 12 platforms, numbered 0-11, and has done so since 2010 - several years before the show was recorded.

"All information correct at time of recording" it says at the end, too ....

If you take no interest in politics that is not such a stupid answer.
I thought this thread was about unbelievable answers.

The correct answer was "sacrifice" even though it asked for an eight letter word?

What episode was it?

Yes I don't see what's so wrong with the Gordon Brown answer either. Yes it's incorrect but not a stupid answer. David Beckham would be a stupid answer, at least Gordon was a prime minister and was one relatively recently (up to 2010).

I appear on the Bayeaux tapestry

I am peanut shaped

I appear every 75 years

Contestant (obviously hung up on the first clue): The Magna Carta

Hm, I thought the Magna Carta was more banana shaped as well as not being a comet

Shouldn't it be a SIX letter word?

Some of those pub quiz teams that get on Eggheads to take them on are absolutely pitiful. It's like Charles Hawtrey taking on a MMA fighter at times. Lambs to the slaughter. most of them. The challengers need to be of a much higher standard because the Eggheads, whether you like them or not, are the best of the best.
Watching one of the five year old repeats of Eggheads the other day, the question was something like "Which organisation rebranded itself with the slogan Putting Humans First in 2008 (or whenever)". After some debate the challengers came up with "Is it Lucozade?" Answer, Amnesty International. I am amazed JV and the Eggs kept a straight face.

Thanks. Well this is worse than pretty much any of the stupid answers from contestants.
At least they have the excuse of being under pressure.

Daft it may be but at least it's a guess. I wouldn't have thought the correct answer was particularly obvious unless you'd seen it in the news or wherever.

On todays The Link... Which E is a symbolic object used as a heraldic device ? One of the worst teams I've ever seen... she gave the answer... Egg Correct answer Emblem..couldn't believe it when she said Egg
Not that stupid if you know nothing about heraldry, as the egg is a symbolic object. Suggests creation, rebirth, new beginnings etc.

To be fair during their deliberation of the answer they did say Greenpeace which would have been a more sensible answer. I don't know how they went from suggesting Greenpeace in their discussions to their given answer Lucozade. Even Jeremy said when he revealed the answer that he thought they would eventually get to the correct answer if they started off on the Greenpeace route.

So technically it does have 11 and one extra

Years ago, on a daft quiz/game programme that I can't recall the name of but included a character called Dusty Bin, a couple were given the following clues to help them name a composer

1. Born in (year), he was German but was naturalized British
2. He became the court composer to King (can't recall which)
3. He's most famous for his Christmas oratorio, The Messiah

The woman turned to the man and asked "Who wrote Handel's Messiah?"

He replied "Chopin?"

They didn't win.

Don't you remember the special hand movement done by the host when saying the title of the show?

Thats kinda funny but not such a daft answer if you nothing about horses imo. At least Desert Orchid was the name of a famous racehorse.

The public may vote but only the queen can confirm someone as PM. Winning the vote is just for show in a way
