No, there are 40 days in Lent. Without wishing to be rude to you, I believe that most people would know that. Also, this was not a general knowledge quiz, it was a radio quiz just about pancake day. If a caller doesn't even know basic things about Shrove Tuesday and why the day happens, they shouldn't be calling in to compete on a show about the subject.
I do know about Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. I am sorry to break it to you, but they are part of the religious calendar which most people these days wouldn't be aware of. |

Well, you can wish all you want, without achieving your aim. And I challenge your belief that most people would know that.

Can't remember the name of the quiz, but it was years ago on one of those only shown on STV - the questioner asked "what is the biggest animal in the world?" Answer: A hare!

One question I remembered on Tipping Point:
Q: The Tour de France is what type of sport? A: France

Sometimes, but very rarely, guesses work. Some years ago on Pointless they were asked to name any actor who had appeared in a particular film. I certainly didn't know any of them and niether did the contestants. They jokingly went for something non descript like Williams. And it was right and pointless.

Jim Brown appeared in said film. They got the point. |

For the record it came up in a pub quiz I was at the other week, and I certainly wasn't 100% sure.

There have been some classics on Tipping Point also. "Which date is celebrated on the 25th of December each year? "Wednesday".
There was another one from a quiz show many years ago. "What is Hitlers first name?" "Heil". |

Private Eye has this exact feature in every issue, titled Dumb Britain. That it can find the material every fortnight to make the column worth running is indicative of either Britain having too many idiots who freeze under pressure, or too many tv quiz shows. I'd suspect a mix of the two.

LOL, that is a daft answer that makes no sense, but presumably that wasn't the question as stated was it? Surely it was "What event (or similar word) is celebrated on the 25th December?" ?

I'm not getting this one. Am I missing something ? I presume the currency of Turkey is the 'dinar' ? but I'd have thought the Euro was a decent guess.
ps. I'm not after causing any strife. I'm genuinely interested why this is in this thread. Euro isn't really that bad a guess though if you don't know. |

A few years ago I went to a quiz and there was a question something along the lines of 'What was the first submarine in the German Navy called ?'
It's a tough question*. The answer given was 'U1'. There was a team of young women there and their answer was - The SS Great Hitler. It's still one of my favourite moments at a pub quiz. *but I got it right. |
