It's one possibility It's probably the one that is most widely accepted, but other possibilities do exist, e.g. the day US President Truman declared the war over (end of 1946), or such as the day in 1989/1990 when Germany re-unified (and thus was able to be party to treaties again) , or IIRC there was some small island somewhere that never did sign a peace treaty until 1998 or thereabouts (or my memory of that QI episode is wrong or the elves were wrong)

It all depends on your interpretation of the word "end" ... and that is the end of this post.

Among other dates in this article, some later :

Quote:
“Cessation of hostilities between the United States and Germany was proclaimed on 13 December 1946 by US President Truman.[27]”

Well, seeing as they didn't think it started until 1942, I wouldn't attach much weight to that.

....it'd be given as correct but it's the WRONG answer. If the full question was 'complete the title of this 1950's book by C.S Lewis, 'The Lion the Witch and the...what?' then there answer which would likely have been given as correct is, 'The Lion the Witch and the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe'

No the ONLY acceptable answer to that question should be 'wardrobe' nothing more, nothing less.

Another example might be:

'World war 2 ended in nineteen-forty...what'?

The answer is 'five'. Not 'nineteen-forty five. It didn't end in nineteen-forty nineteen forty five.

...maybe it's just me but I wish quiz shows would be more exact on these things. If a person chooses to interrupted a question and as a result mis-words their answer then that's their own fault.”

First of all whether this matters at all in any meaningful sense really only depends whether the point of the question is to determine the extent of the contestant's knowledge, or whether the form of the answer itself is more relevant, such as the fourth box in Only Connect's sequence round.

Secondly, I think it's a reasonable interpretation of the instruction (not question as you incorrectly call it) "complete the title" anyway to mean state the complete title as your answer.

And It's "their answer", not "there answer" as you wrote.

Okay, this isn't really a 'stupid' answer but it's definitely making yourself 'look' stupid...

On Eggheads last night, one of the questions was "In which TV show does Steven Merchant play hapless agent Darren Lamb?" with the answers being A. Extras, B. The Office or C. Life's Too Short.

The contestant went with Life's Too Short, claiming to be a Gervais fan. Jeremy then asked his team if he was right and some pipsqueak piped up saying "I'm a huge Ricky Gervais fan, so yeah, it's right."

The look on his face when told he was wrong was ace. Just had the look of "I've made a total prat of myself on national TV" look about him.

But how many people would be likely to know that?

Why is that a stupid answer? Unless you know your US geography it's a good guess.

Surely that is a sensible 'guess' a stupid answer would be 'Canada' or 'Mexico'

About 30 years ago there was a quiz where teams of 3 played in knockout games, the winners going onto the next round, 3 blokes from Northern Ireland went through to the final after hardly getting a question wrong in the whole series, the last question in which if they got right they would have won the series was Which county in Northern Ireland is the Giants causeway in?...they got it wrong.

Chris from the Eggheads has done a similar thing several times where he is so sure and even says the answer with a swagger only to look very sheepish when it is actually wrong.

This link includes some of his fails and other "funny" moments. The first couple are funny and are most similar to what you describe...

Surely most people have a grasp of U.S. Geography, perhaps more so than British geography. A sensible answer, although probably high points, would be California or Florida. Most of the low points were New England states.

Arkansas is no way a bad answer.

Egypt bordering the Pacific is though.

Why would you think that most people have a grasp of US Geography. I couldn't point out Dallas, or Texas or Detroit amongst many many others US places on a map. I could point out Southampton, Newcastle, Cardiff or Dundee though.

I would know approximately where California and Florida are but doubt it would be too accurate.

Me too. My general knowledge is pretty good but I haven't a scooby as to where exactly a lot of the US states are beyond the odd "obvious" coastal one.

If someone answers yes to your question could we then post that as an example?

You couldn't pick which one was Texas even with the states outlined for you? (Which they were in the case in point.)

It was one of those multiple choice questions. Denmark, Ireland or some other country I forget the name of.

She finished last of the finishers in the Olympic event and was banned along with the officials who massaged her times to get her in in the first place, although her ban was subsequently overturned.

So although it's not ridiculous it does make Burt Kwouk's participation a bit less likely. Not sure of the appeal of her in a ski suit though...
