I posted earlier:
Classic daft answer today on an old '15 to 1' on Challenge.
Young-ish contestant was asked: What BRITISH film won
an award ( I think an academy award but missed part of
the question) and was directed by and starred Lawrence
Olivier,in 1940'
Answer' Lawrence of Arabia'? (very hopefully asked)

I DID say I missed part of the question, (as my neighbour
was apparently nailing up some new wallpaper!) and it was
in fact 'Which 1940's film...etc' NOT 'which 1940 film' which
I said. The answer was Hamlet in 1948, and the reason I
took is as a 'stupid' answer was that Olivier had no connection
to the 'Lawrence of Arabia' film, which was a David Lean one.
My apologies for hearing it wrong/not hearing it properly, due
to outside interference!

I still don't understand why you highlighted the "British" detail though, because as I said, Lawrence of Arabia is a British film so not a stupid guess in that regard...

15-1 (90s version)

British Monarchy:
Four Kings have sat on the throne this century. Who had never been The Prince of Wales?

Queen Elizabeth!

Ok, you can put it down to pressure but when you're sat at home and that answer comes out then you have to laugh

I overheard one on my dad's hospital TV last night - no idea what the programme was.

What's the opposite of cold? Answer: Frozen.

I believe that's from a Radio One game where they have to say the wrong answers or something. (I heard it too).

I still don't understand why he thinks it was a stupid answer at all.

Lawrence of Arabia was an Oscar-winning British film made over 50 years ago that starred an English Shakesperean actor in the title role.

Hamlet was an Oscar-winning British film made over 60 years ago that starred an English Shakesperean actor in the title role.

Apart from the 14 year time difference between the making of the two movies, they share a lot of similarities.

Why was it a stupid answer? Just because Laurence Olivier is called Laurence, and Lawrence of Arabia was called TE Lawrence? That doesn't make it a stupid answer.

It just keeps getting better. This one came up on The Chase just now:

"How many years are there between a Stanley Kubrick sci-fi film and a George Orwell novel?"

A 17
B 57
C 107

She chose C!

Well, not everyone will have heard of Stella McCartney. Obviously this one hadn't!

Did I just hear someone on Pointless say Renaissance as a person's name ie Rene Saunce as an answer to name a painter? I was half asleep at the time, working nights, and in the other room, but if so that's staggering!

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!

Multi-purpose beverage container replenishment outreach co-ordinator & ad-hoc table cleansing operative.

Please get the title right.

To be fair, if you've never heard of Stanley Kubrick - which is perfectly plausible - then you're not going to have the faintest idea on that one, even if the penny drops afterwards that you had heard of the film 2001.

So not that stupid at all really, certainly not under time pressure.

I suspect that the poster timebug has misunderstood this thread as being one for answers that are "stupid" because "I knew the answer and the contestant didn't" - whereas in fact what we'd be after for a question like this would be an answer like Jurassic Park. Not Lawrence of Arabia, which is a perfectly fair guess from somebody who simply doesn't know.

So you don't know the answer, so you guess. Why is that stupid?

I don't think you (and several others) understand the point of this thread.

It was 1984 she hadn't heard of.

She had vaguely heard of the George Orwell novel, but thought it was 18 something so went for the high answer. Still no excuse of course.
