Here's one (I think on Pointless):
Famous Russians
17-year-old 2004 Wimbledon champion
Martina Navratilova

There's also been some good ones on Two Tribes but can't remember them now. Mostly Geography related.

Only saw this once and i may have got the names wrong but it was on 3-2-1

Ted Rogers asked "Who's the composer of Handels Water Music"
The contestant answered "Chopin?"
"No that's not right we'll have to pass it over"
The next contestant answered "Beethoven?"

And a corker from University Challenge

What is the population density of the UK in persons per square kilometres?

Three and a half
Well, not knowing the area of the UK in square kilometres I couldn't hazard a guess. So what was the correct answer? The answer given sounds a bit low - but why a "corker"?

After she gave that JR answer her partner then said the French revolutionary stabbed in the bath was Joan Of Arc.

I agree, it's not a corker.

According to Wiki, the UK population density is 262km²

Canada is roughly three and a half per km²

Someone on Decimate was asked what an angle between 90° and 180° is called.

Options were acute, obtuse or reflex. The person didn't know so he passed it back and the other players said reflex. How can you not know simple maths stuff from SCHOOL!?

What kind of animal doesn't change its spots? Zebra
Still technically correct though.

Yes as said above that was hilarious. It's fair enough that she just had some mental block
going on but some of the guesses and then the reactions from the others were great.

How is this a stupid answer?

It's just a question of forgetting. Hell I'd forgotten what a reflex angle was until just now.

It's not something I use in everyday life.

Although it wasn't an answer by a contestant playing the game, it was one of the usual suspects on Perfection who was asked to give her opinion on the contestant's 4 true/false questions & answers. One of the questions was as follows:

Q. A polar bear's main source of nutrition is penguins.
Contestant's answer - False

Usual suspect (imagine a very broad welsh accent): "Now I'm pretty sure that polar bears do like a bit of penguin in their diet, so I think that one's wrong".

Some people say owt but their prayers on that show.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

Where there's muck there's

a) brass
b) tin
c) copper
d) zinc

Contestant 'Tin'

I mentioned this on another thread a few weeks ago, and amazingly one or two posters thought this question was difficult. It was for £1,000 and the contestant had already used all her lifelines, so went home with nothing.

But the frightening thing was that one of the contestants was a teacher. I think he was the one that supplied the answer. I fear for today's kids.

Why? Was he a maths teacher? If not, how does that make you fear for today's kids?

Re. the 'obtuse' answer on decimate. I don't think the fella who got it wrong said he was a teacher but he did claim to have a degree in Maths.

I thought it was surprising that he didn't know what an obtuse angle was and astonishing for someone claiming to have a degree in Maths not to know it so I tried the question out on my 9 year old niece exactly as it had been asked on the show and she knew the answer. And she was 9 mind !

I would have thought a teacher should have a basic education and knowledge, whatever he teaches.

However I may have confused him with someone else, seeing as another poster said he claimed to have a Maths degree. Even worse!

It isn't the study of anything! It's the removal of something.

Probably another misremembered one - ironic how many on this thread are snorting at wrong answers and quoting the questions wrongly

Your niece probably learnt it quite recently. I had to really rack my brains and may well have been flummuxed if on telly - you forget a lot over 30 odd years. I doubt trigonometry features highly in a maths degree either.

Don't forget the Nick Brown moment. It was some MPs question and it was a right answer AND Pointless. They then went on to win £12,500
I was at the recording for that episode!

Best one I've seen lately was on the Chase.

Bradley: "Xenon and what other element contain the letter 'X'?"

Contestant: "Xylophone"

I remember when Richard & Judy used to do that phone-in quiz, one contestant was asked "What three things did the Wise Men bring as gifts for Jesus?" to which the viewer replied "Gold, Silver and Bronze"
