Surely this has been covered? As it happens, there was only a period of less than 2 months between the start of the first Pope John Paul's time and the next. Unless the question was asked in this small window there were 2 so the first one is known as The First. Referring to Victoria as V1 does not make sense as there might never be another Queen Victoria. If there is (but only if) then she will be called Victoria The First from that point. It's not about what someone was called during their reign (or equivalent) but what they are known as now, or when the question was asked. This is just the way the system works. Even the car example is the same. Now it would be called Mk1. If you are being asked now it means the extra detail is included.

To be up to date, Pope Francis is called that.

He cannot be referred to as Pope Francis the first, until such times as there is another Pope who takes the name of Francis, who will then take the title Francis the 2nd. This may not happen for many many years, if at all.

On this titles thing it seems that King James VI of Scotland was actually called King James the first when he became King of England (and other places). That is he was known as "the first" right away. So that is an unusual exception to the norm.

Obviously this is still not relevant to the thread but to be fair it seems the thread has been losing focus for a while anyway.

A newspaper headline of the time said "Pope dies again"

When the present Queen ascended the throne and became Elizabeth 2nd, the Scots complained because Elizabeth 1st had nor been Queen of Scotland. Churchill decided the matter by decreeing that in future the sovereign would be know by the highest number.

Because the scene was from Back to The Future 2, when he had to run the cable from the clock tower to the cable across the road for the lightning strike to travel through.

In the first film the car had power and just need to reach a certain speed to travel back in time.

It would be interesting if it could be found out what the contestant's thought process was at the time.
Because there are many people who aren't that knowledgeable about history and it's quite plausible that he might have thought that Emmett Brown was a real historical figure which the Back to The Future films used to create fiction from.
Much like Abraham Lincoln in the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter film.

Snap. I just posted to say the same thing in my post above before I got to read your post.
I think it's plausible that this may have been the case, because Emmett Brown is the sort of name that has a ring to it that sounds like it could be a real historical name. If it was on the tip of your tongue because the name was vaguely familiar, and you know it had something to do with electricity in some way because all these bits were bubbling away in your brain wanting to come out as an answer, then it manifests itself into a glorious fully formed mistake.

The question wasn't asked during the reign of Pope John Paul I.
It was just asked the other day.

Given the character is referred to nearly all the time as 'Doc' you would need a pretty detailed knowledge of the film to believe that. And if so, it would be dubious then as to whether you thought they could be the equivalent to Abraham Lincoln vampire killer.

It's actually the first film where they need the Lighting strike to power the car as they can't get hold of Plutonium in 1955.

As evidenced in my post above I clearly don't have pretty detailed knowledge of the film, but yet I knew.
It was vague knowledge, I had to Google it to check, but nevertheless it was vague enough knowledge which was somewhere in my head, which is similar to the mindset we are talking about with a person in a quiz who has vague recollections of something that feels familiar but which isn't clear.
After all he got the name from somewhere. Where else would he have picked that name up from and linked it to some electricity based theme?

Ye as mentioned that was the first film. The second film does end with the car being accidentally struck by lightning that sends Doc to the wild west. Maybe that was part of why you thought the second film.

As for the answer yes it is not that ridiculous if someone is not that familiar with the films but just vaguely remembered the name or indeed thought he was based on a real person. Especially under pressure. It's still funny though

No I can't make that excuse, hand on my heart I made a mistake. Although the scene you mention from the second film works as well.

The Edge
Q Charles Babbage is best known for inventing an early version of what ?

A The Hobbit

Radio Lancashire
Q What did St Patrick drive out of Ireland?

A A motor car. No, there wouldn't have been motor cars in his day. A horse and cart.

Quite like the logic of the second one, even though the contestant completely misunderstood what was meant by 'drive'

Qualifying at what?

I take it the answer is wrong, but why so you think it's stupid?

Uruguay is in South America so they can hardly qualify for the UEFA Euro 2016.

Not sure what "The Edge" is, but is it possible the contestant misheard the question as "Baggins" so said The Hobbit? No idea.
