Uruguay is in South America so they can hardly qualify for the UEFA Euro 2016.
The clue is in "Euro".
You're both absolutely correct; I must have been having a bad day.

A newspaper headline of the time said "Pope dies again"

Pointless Celebs today

Question was to name countries beginning with A, T, L or S.

Mark Lawrenson came up with Alaska!

So why is there a Queen Elizabeth the 1st and Queen Elizabeth the 2nd ?
Just to clarify, you're not Scottish at all are you?

To turn this JFK thing on its head - on Pointless a while ago there was a round about Historical Assassinations. One clue was "Assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas". The contestant answered "JR".

Now that qualifies as a stupid answer I think. But a very funny one
Borderline. Either a slip of the tongue or a reasonable stab at an answer by somebody who didn't watch the programme but was aware there was some sort of attempted murder plot.

On this titles thing it seems that King James VI of Scotland was actually called King James the first when he became King of England (and other places). That is he was known as "the first" right away. So that is an unusual exception to the norm.
When the present Queen ascended the throne and became Elizabeth 2nd, the Scots complained because Elizabeth 1st had nor been Queen of Scotland. Churchill decided the matter by decreeing that in future the sovereign would be know by the highest number.
Interesting. Does that mean that if there is another James he will be King James VIII (8th)?

Some Scots moaned (as usual) when the Queen was given the Regnal number 'II' because there had been a Queen Elizabeth II of Scotland previously. So it was later decided that any future Kings or Queens would have a Regnal number which would take into account Kings and Queens of Scotland.

Not borderline, it's stupid on multiple levels. The question was about historical assassinations, and Dallas (the TV show) is fictional. So it wasn't a reasonable stab at an answer. I don't see how JR can be a slip of the tongue for JFK either.

If they genuinely thought the question meant the TV show Dallas then it's even more stupid.

Again, not a stupid answer. Just someone who is ignorant about sport, by the sound of it!

Yes if you don't know the answer then have a stab.

I for instance recently learnt (from a quiz programme) that Harry Styles is from One Direction however previously to that I had heard the name and if the question was "who is the lead singer of Cold Play?" I may have answered "Harry Styles" because I knew he had something to do with pop music. That's not stupidity it's ignorance of modern pop music and it's better to have a guess with a known name than make up one.

I remember it happening. The contestant answered "J" and Alexander Armstrong smiled, then she said "R" instead of "FK" and AA looked as if someone had just punched him in the stomach.

It was a stupid answer as the contestant knew it was wrong (i.e. that Federer was a tennis player rather than a footballer) but she said it anyway as he was the only Roger she could think of.

I knew someone would bring this one up!

On the face of it, it is stupid but she said she could think of only one Roger and that was Federer and just randomly picked one of them. She knew her answer was WRONG.

OK, that wasn't made clear in the earlier post.

I have no interest in football or other sports so no idea what team Federer plays for but wasn't there an African footballer with a similar name who the contetsant could have been thinking of?

I don't agree with that logic. I wouldn't assume the topic of historical assassinations only refers to non-fictional people. I'd interpret historical as noteworthy, the latter including the assassinations/attempted assassinations of both JR and JFK.

Yes, but you're not to know that if you have no knowledge of the TV show (beyond something about a character called JR having once been shot). Nor is the name LHO going to mean anything else to you if you never learned about JFK at school...

Oh come on. Someone must be pretty dumb never to heave heard of Lee Harvey Oswald. You can still educate yourself after you've left school.

Not in this instance, roger Federer is a tennis player, the contestant said it was the only famous Roger she could think of knowing it was wrong. There is no African footballer with a similar sounding name as far as I am aware.

Does the fact that someone plays tennis mean that they can't also play football?

Wasn't there a famous cricketer who also played in a professional football team?
