It's just 11 kilometres from the South American mainland, so it is really part of South America.

I despair if anyone thought Queen Victoria was on the throne during World War 1.

Which wasn't the question, though.

I think you'd find a lot of people couldn't tell you the dates of Victoria's reign.

1839 to 1901 ?

But that's not the point, surely if you were in anyway promoting yourself as a "quizzer" then you'd at least learn your basic standard lists of monarchs, prime ministers, US presidents, and to fall on something like that is a touch embarrassing.

Well, if the contestants knew the answers to all the questions on quiz shows they'd be a bit boring and rather pointless

(And I'd also have thought that far from all the people who go on them do "promote themselves as a quizzer", for others it's more of a fun endeavour or challenge.)

I suppose that marks the difference between a "professional quizzer" and your average Joe who just turns up and wings it.

I think there's a range of degrees between the two.

Ok - I understand them not knowing Villa Park but how were they spelling "Vally"?”

There were only five letters in the first word. "Valley", last time I counted, has six.

I think most people would be aware that the Victorian era wasn't in 1915 at the same time as World War 1 with tanks and aircraft. They'd think of things like Oliver Twist and other assorted Dickensian imagery.

What's going on with this thread? I thought it was supposed to be a fun thread just to have a bit of a laugh. But I come on here and every time somebody tries to post something, somebody else interjects to explain why it isn't a stupid answer and therefore doesn't qualify to be in this thread.

Well, most of the examples really aren't that stupid, so it's a fair point to make!

Do we really want a thread called "Incorrect answers in quiz shows"? It might be a bit boring - and very long. Especially if we include passes.

There already is a thread called that. I'd post the link for it if I knew how to do it, but it's easy enough to find by googling it.

But it's in reference to answers the quiz show gives as the right answer that are wrong.

For example recently on Tipping Point the question was "Starting at zero, name the first even number."

The player said two, and this was given as correct.

But this answer is wrong as zero is itself an even number, because it is divisible by two so the answer should have been zero.

This thread has lost its way a bit because there has been a lot of arguing about what constitutes a stupid answer, as opposed to just a wrong one. I certainly think there is the odd post that definitely stretches the idea of "stupid" answer, and one or two posters are just posting things that are simply wrong answers. I rarely post on this thread now, even though it was me that got it going again last year when it had lain dormant for a month.

Anyway, last year on ITV's short lived Freeze Out quiz show, the question was, "Who commanded the English army at the Battle of Hastings."

Acceptable answer? King Harold.
Smartypants answer? Harold II or Harold Godwinson.

The actual answer given by the player was.. Napoleon.

I think that's pretty hard to beat. Alright at least Napoleon was a military commander, so there were more stupid answers that could have been given. Charles Dickens, perhaps. Henry Cooper. SpongeBob Squarepants.

But not much more stupid.

This thread is getting out of hand. A long discussion about Victoria's reign when the answer wasn't even given but was just an aside during discussions!

Amusing, but to be fair as soon as he said it, he realised how stupid it was and said Horse (too late of course). He also said "I can't think why I said that".

They may have thought it was named after Frankie Valli

How can you divide nothing into two. I

You can divide zero into as many parts as you like.

Zero has the most boring and easy to remember times table there is:

One times zero is zero.
Two times zero is zero.
Three times zero is zero
and so on.

So zero is clearly an even number because it is divisible by two - two times zero is zero.

Or another way to look at it is: zero divided by two is zero. There is no remainder on division by two, therefore zero is an even number.

You can look up the Wikipedia article on the "parity of zero" for more detail on this if you're interested.

I'm puzzled by this 'zero' information. If I have zero apples, and give you half, we both have zero apples, not half-zero apples. How does that work?
