You might need to use zero in an equation.
I don't just mean set as a question at school level, I mean in real world practical applications.

You have both zero and half of zero apples as they are the same thing in the same way that half of four apples is the same as two apples.

Dividing nothing into anything is undefined - 2/0, 3/0, 259/0 etc.

You can divide nothing by anything you like - 0/2, 0/5, 0/1073 etc.

Zero does not have a value therefore cannot be divided. It is also NOT an even number as it is not a number. Numbers have values.

Zero *is* an even number! Plenty of evidence on the net...

I remember the "which EU country drives on the left?" saga being broadcast on Radio 4 as part of another programme (it might have been on John Peel!s Home Truths). Still one of the funniest things I have ever heard

It is an even number and it has a value of zero. Learn some basic maths and you will see immediately that this is the case.

Sounds more like someone misunderstanding the question rather than being stupid.

Give an example of an answer to a question that to you wouldn't sound more like someone misunderstanding the question, then.

Well, yes, I suppose they could have misheard it as 'What's the oldest age a person can be before being described as a teenager?' That would explain the answer!

And so the search continues.

I think I put a ? on there to indicate it was my best guess,

Yep, I did. Phew.

Anyway, I wasn't complaining, I was making a side point that a "professional quizzer" would have this memorised. My ability to memorise lists parrot fashion is appalling, and hence I would never put myself up as a quizzer.

On Tipping Point just now:

Q: What is the only continent that contains all five vowels in its name?

A: Indonesia

I have to say it took me maybe 20 to 30 seconds to work that out without the pressure of being in a TV studio.

Indeed - all it takes is for you to mishear "continent" as "country", and then you're suddenly scrabbling with hundreds of options in your head rather than just five...

If it's wrong in two different ways is it closer to being a stupid answer?

No idea, but it looks from valkay's post above like it's been another misquoted question in the first place...

I'm guessing they're counting South America as a continent.

There was a previous discussion about what definition/system is used for questions like this as it can make the question ambiguous or an seemingly correct answer deemed incorrect if the quiz is using the 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 system.

So it's a dumb question as well as a dumb answer.

I guess so. That answer would never have occurred to me, and I'm normally good with geography questions.

Also, because Lee Harvey Oswald couldn't have killed JFK.
