Re. the 'obtuse' answer on decimate. I don't think the fella who got it wrong said he was a teacher but he did claim to have a degree in Maths.

I thought it was surprising that he didn't know what an obtuse angle was and astonishing for someone claiming to have a degree in Maths not to know it so I tried the question out on my 9 year old niece exactly as it had been asked on the show and she knew the answer. And she was 9 mind !
If you are a kid at school, or a school teacher, that kind of information would be fresh i your mind. But as it has almost nothing to do with degree level mathematics, why should a maths graduate be expected to know it?

I think the worst examples are those given by the "usual suspects" in Perfection. They have plenty of time to think and aren't under pressure. They are sometimes utterly convinced they are right too. The contestants in most quizzes are under pressure and making mistakes is understandable, it doesn't mean they are thick. The Weakest Link was probably the worst for that as you would have had Anne Robinson scowling at you too.

If it's an easy question and they don't know then that's dumb. If the question isn't so easy and they say the first thing they think of that's not really dumb at all.

Probably another misremembered one - ironic how many on this thread are snorting at wrong answers and quoting the questions wrongly
it's funny how that happens. The power of fallibility in action!

Your niece probably learnt it quite recently. I had to really rack my brains and may well have been flummuxed if on telly - you forget a lot over 30 odd years. I doubt trigonometry features highly in a maths degree either.
This is a great point. Especially when you think how memory actually works.

I am dubious about how genuine her comments are. Maybe I am getting into to silly
town territory but just perhaps she is acting the persona that works for the show!

Even if that is not true the presenter seemed like an utter ****.

Although it wasn't an answer by a contestant playing the game, it was one of the usual suspects on Perfection who was asked to give her opinion on the contestant's 4 true/false questions & answers. One of the questions was as follows:

Q. A polar bear's main source of nutrition is penguins.
Contestant's answer - False

Usual suspect (imagine a very broad welsh accent): "Now I'm pretty sure that polar bears do like a bit of penguin in their diet, so I think that one's wrong".

Some people say owt but their prayers on that show.
Why is their accent relevant?

There's a couple of great ones here, especially the 'how many decades' question.

Another corker on The Chase this evening. "Which classic Scottish dish is traditionally served on Burns night?" Answer: "Bangers and mash".

To be fair, the question was "What is the central dish at the Burns night supper", Scottish wasn't mentioned. And I think the lady misheard it as being Bonfire Night.

She was still wrong on both counts and Bradley couldn't stop laughing.

A silly answer that ended up winning the contestant the competition :

"What was Shakespeare's wife called?"

Answer:

"Mrs Shakespeare"......

Bloke on Tipping Point today.

"Which US state comes after the word 'Baked' to make an ice cream and meringue dessert?"

Alaska, maybe? I know next to nothing about Food and Drink,it's my worst subject, but even I've heard of Baked Alaska.

His answer? Victoria. That well known US state.

His next question was "Ernest Rutherford won a Nobel prize in 1908 in which subject?"

Now I wasn't absolutely sure on that. I knew he worked on the structure of the atom,so it was either Chemistry or Physics. In fact it was Chemistry, but Physics would have been a reasonable answer. Or Economics,Peace or Medicine would have been half decent guesses (the other Nobel prize categories).

His answer, after,to be fair, admitting he had no idea? "Railways".

The Nobel prize for railways. As we say in Scotland,"Aye,right."

You do wonder why people with such a demonstrably limited general knowledge apply to go on these shows.

Well, his opponent thought the Bay Of Pigs incident was an invasion of Spain. And she wasn't a young lass, so must have lived through that whole business.

No,that wasn't a great answer either. (The Bay of Pigs one.) But sometimes if you don't know the answer, you can at least make an intelligent guess. After all it's not against the clock, you've got time to think. "Railways" is just a feeble answer that's got no chance of being right.

There seems to be no Tipping Point thread on here,or if there is,nobody posts on it.

That is a pretty silly answer, but to be fair that's a tough question, particularly on The Weakest Link.when you've got so little time to answer.

The correct answer is National Aeronautics and Space Administration. I once had this question at a pub quiz and put that down as the answer but the quizmaster insisted that the second A stood for Agency.

This was before mobile phones with internet access,so it couldn't be easily verified.

The most common mistake with NASA seems to be thinking it is North American Space Administration (or maybe Agency). I can just imagine your annoyance as the quizmaster says you are wrong.

On the Chase tonight "What salad dressing is usually found in a BLT sandwich?" Answer "Balsamic vinegar". That would be one soggy sandwich.

To be fair to her, she did seem to completely lose it after National and just said the first thing that came into her mind. She knew as she was saying it that it was wrong.

She did have the decency to look suitably embarrassed.

I'd never seen that before, very funny.

Only three questions to guess what's in the box though? Pretty tough.

And of course we never found out what was actually in it.
