But if you're a bloke and don't know the answer to a football question (like me) then people are incredulous, as though you should.

A bit like when they ask what team you support and you tell them none, especially here in Scotland - same as when they ask whether you are RC or protestant and you say neither!

Can we just get back to funny answers?
If you didn't know the question. It doesn't matter.

If somebody was going on Pointless, where they know there's a strong chance of there being a geography question, you'd expect them to brush up on their geography beforehand if it isn't a strong subject for them.
Perhaps they brushed up on South America and were unfortunate to get an Africa question instead. Where do you stop brushing up on World geography?

Agreed, I always object to sports questions being considered General Knowledge and you being expected to know who won the FA Cup many years ago - I could not even tell you who won or played last year.
But some sports events are so embedded in the national psyche as to be considered general knowledge, like the world cup win and Hurst's hat trick, Redgrave's gold medals, or Botham's ashes.

I'll have to download this episode of the chase from last week

Some stupid ones in that article

I don't believe Bamber ever asked what Gandhi's first name was. It's not a UC type question, and an obvious joke.

I've always understood that general knowledge questions can be any subject but at a level that doesn't require in depth knowledge
If you're the sort of quiz team member who memorises lists, then FA Cup winners are fair game. But not which player of manager moved to a team years ago. But I don't see why medal winners at sports should be classed as general knowledge - there are so many of them. Especially when the americans insist on a new medal for every further five yards swum.

Presumably they were expecting someone to answer "mahatma", to great hilarity.

There was a good final game in Eggheads yesterday due to Barry twice blurting out corrections to the other team but being wrong with them right. I wouldn't say either was especially easy although I knew them so they couldn't have been that hard. His answers weren't stupid as such but maybe the Egghead version of stupid, especially as he said the answers with apparent confidence (the first one in particular) in the way Chris has done a few times. It is always satisfying to see the smugness punctured and that it was Barry made it all the better.

You start at the North Pole and end at the South Pole. Would take a while admittedly. It would be annoying if then there no geography questions, only questions about Rob Schneider films or the Peruvian netball league.

How far do you take it though?

Lets not have anything to do with countries or capital cities as a general knowledge question because there's loads of them?

How about film and TV? There's loads of them too so they cant be in general knowledge?

Animals? Nope, too many.

Going by your logic General Knowledge wouldn't exist as a quiz category!

LOL. You know very well countries, capitals and currencies are important, while who won a medal is totally unimportant. Similarly, some films are classics, while others definitely aren't.

As for animals, I hate the "what type of animal is ... " questions, because you never know how far up the taxonomy they want for the answer.

As a rule of thumb, if it's a three-part multiple choice and one of the answers is antelope, then that is always the correct answer.

How do you define what's important and what's not though?

Why just one continent? I don't know how far in advance Pointless contestants are told they're appearing on the programme, if I was the things I'd brush up on are geography, British prime ministers, American presidents, British monarchs and the periodic table, as you can be sure there'll be at least one question on one of those subjects.
Regarding sport, it's not just a question of memorising lists of winners, some people remember those events from the time.

That's fine with multiple choice, but if it's not, and you know it's an antelope, is the answer just "antelope", "even toed ungulate" or something more complex?

Usually, all species of the Alcelaphinae, Antilopinae, Hippotraginae, Reduncinae, Cephalophinae, many Bovinae, the grey rhebok, and the impala are called antelopes.

That's always the problem in setting general knowledge questions. I recall that while setting over 100 quizzes of 50 questions each, I had only a handful of sports questions. However, knowing my audience, I had a lot of questions on 1950s radio shows.

Tipping Point Today. (It was the answer by the contestant who didn't have to answer but I still think it counts).

What short word do you get from the Roman numerals for 1009?

Emperor.

(The answer from the one that counted was "cove" so not much better).

I don't know every fact either, but knowing Nairobi is not a country is rather basic general knowledge. Sometimes I wonder whether quiz show producers deliberately screen out knowledgeable contestants, especially on shows like Tipping Point and In It to Win It where the questions are easy and someone with good GK could clean up.
Of course they do. You very rarely get 4 "quizzers" on The Chase.

Why is it a joke? The answer would be Mohandas

It would, but many people (including me, before I looked it up) think it's "Mahatma".

The joke being referred to is in the article - the fact that somebody (allegedly) said on University Challenge that his first name was "Goosey"

I think it means one player answered wrongly with cove, another was asked what they would have said had they been asked and said emperor.

To get back on track, on Pointless tonight. Question - countries with names starting with two consonants. First answer was Papua New Guinea. The thing is, did the contestant misunderstand the question, or was he thinking "p,n."?

I think he must have thought the question meant countries that had words each starting with consonants. Unfortunate to be on podium one as he wouldn't have made that mistake had he heard the other answers first.

Was Myanmar a pointless answer? I bet The Gambia was, or The Seychelles which might be controversial..
