I don't think he actually said Freddie, did he? Just the "lead singer of Queen". "Freddie" would have triggered the correct answer subconsciously without having to think about it.

If you're in a certain age group, perhaps.

No - but Mick Mars of Motley Crue does.

Yes, it's another Tipping Point moment but I completely lost it on this one:

Q: "The name of which sandwich restaurant means 'ready to eat' in French?"

A: Subway

Actual answer was Pret A Manger.

Tipping Point, ITV:

Ben Shephard asked "Grenadiers were traditionally named after what weapon that they threw?"

Contestant: "Spears".

The Chase, ITV:

Bradley Walsh asked "Which famous ship began construction in 1510?"

Contestant: "The Titanic"

Pointless, BBC

Alexander Armstrong asked "We're looking for the name of any team who took part in the qualifying stages of Euro 2016"

Contestant: "Well, there are three that I know which have already gone so I'll say Uruguay"

(I just thought I'd get the thread back on topic)

It's just possible they knew the first rivet was hammered home at ten past three some day in 1910.

I don't like the wording of the question. It deserved a stupid answer.

Well, obviously. You didn't need to spell it out

Today's?!!

Freddie's been dead 25 years!

As to the thread title, this answer pretty much fits into the category. And when I asked a class of Year 10 pupils recently in a Christmas quiz, over 20 of the 30 knew who he was ... first and second name!

But would they have known who the lead singer of Queen was, without any other clues?

I think it was a reaction to the 'I'm too young' reason for not knowing and showing that people who were alive through the period when the group was successful did not know their names.

Correct, we know about Freddie because we were about at the time and listening to the music of the day. I doubt very much my granddaughters have any idea who he was just like I have no idea who is about the music scene these days.

I think it was a repeat episode of Pointless, but one of the clues was "Number of US states". The bloke didn't answer it but did say "I'm pretty sure it's 51 or 52, it changes all the time"...

But also there will be plenty of people around today, of pop music age, who have no idea about who are in various current pop groups, even very successful ones. It was presumed that anyone who was a teenager or in their twenties forty years ago would know Mercury's surname.

I think I only came across him because of Live Aid.

Why not? It makes sense!

For people who are elderly now, it could even be "after my time" - they may not have been interested in the pop scene at the time they were middle-aged.

Uruguay

Not such a stupid answer if you don't/didnt watch it that year (or don't generally) plus Conchita sounds like a South American name.
