I know that but the actual question they were asked did say 'named after where it was built'. That was my point as to why the answer was silly.

As in building a ship in Sheffield has one or two drawbacks if you look at any map.
It's not the most stupid answer though. If they had said HMS Boaty Mc Boatplace then that would have been stupid.

To be fair, if you're asked a question like that in a three-second time frame and you haven't the first clue, I can see such logical thought processes going out of the window...

Yes, I'm prepared to give more benefit of doubt on timed quizzes.

Bowie did several famous duets but none with Jerome.

Doesn't really matter.

Q2. "Who duetted with Jerome Flynn, having 3 No. 1s in the 90s?"

A2. "David Bowie"
I take it that that's an incorrect answer, but why is it a stupid one?

It just shows how one person's 'stupid answer' is a reasonable answer to another person. I have absolutely no idea who Jerome Flynn is or was so no answer is 'stupid' to me.

That's not stupid if you've never heard of the internet...

(Irony: the excuse trotted out several times in this thread... )

Or have no ides what a "domain" is.

I think that, to be classed as a stupid answer, it should be completely the wrong category. Any who thinks they're good enough to enter a TV quiz should at least know the names of the countries, and major cities, of the world. To answer a question asking for a city with the name of a country, or vice versa, is stupid. To give the wrong city or country is incorrect, though it could also be stupid depending on the actual question.

To give the incorrect answer because you don't know the exact years in which a 70s pop group produced certain hits isn't stupid, nor is not knowing which football clubs managers manage, or players play for. Or even never having heard of the managers or players.

To be fair, surely that contestant was just saying that (for JB) because they didn't have an idea on any of them?

Yes!

It was a repeat from 2013 apparently, but she guessed almost all the answers and they were very uneducated guesses as well for eg in the movie round, complete the film title "Judgement at ..." answer given, "Tiffany's".

A lot of the suggestions on here sort of assume that the contestants have an unlimited amout of time to think, and are under no pressure whatsoever. I can well imagine myself blurting out "Tiffany's" about a second too early

I think there has to be a point where you expect people to have encountered the names due to them being in the public eye, regardless of how much you dislike their particular field.

There's a difference between hearing someone's name, even frequently, and having any idea who they are.
