Name a US state with a coastline. Mexico? Seriously? There is not excuse for that answer. It is a dumb answer. End of.

You have my heartfelt apologies for incorrectly judging forum ettiquette in what is clearly supposed to be a light-hearted thread.

I wish I hadn't bothered posting the bloody thing now.

I know how you feel. It's bloody painful on here sometimes the amount of pedants and smart arses trying to make themselves look clever but actually doing the opposite.

American States with coastlines.

"Mexico".”

Don't they always say 'country' when they mean that and define it as having a seat at the United Nations. So that would imply that 'state' did not mean a country.

But that could equally apply to any country in South America, such as Bolivia.

Are there seriously people defending the answer of "Mexico" as a US state? Good grief.

This is a very good example of why I don't post in this thread anymore

Don't worry, no one is doing that!

No. American state. Subtle difference.

It could indeed. A moot point though, now we know what the actual question was!

The two scenarios are

1) They genuinely believed that Mexico was a US State rather than a separate country. (In the same manner as a lot of people think Republic of Ireland is linked to or part of the UK in some way.)

2) They panicked.

There is no confusion about the question - it was States of the USA with a coastline

Mexico is a dumb answer - although he was outdumbed by his partner who said Orlando when it came to his turn.

They were both teachers btw

Thank you. Unfortunately there are some on here who will play really anal semantics with any question. Mexico was a stupid answer, move on.

I don't think anyone was playing "anal semantics" with that question. I agree it was a stupid answer, but was just having a bit of fun by saying that Mexico could arguably be called an American state. But as it turned out, that wasn't the question, so that argument couldn't have been used!

Meanwhile back to the thread. There was a cracker on Tipping Point the other day. Can't remember the exact question but it was something like in which European country was this person elected as leader. And the answer given, Africa!

I tend to give contestants the benefit of the doubt with stupid or silly answers especially has a time limit.

Sometimes they just don't know so give a silly answer rather than a stupid answer instead of passing.
Other times they may have mis heard the question or started thinking about the answer while the question is still being read out and mis a important piece of info.

Other times they might just have a brian fart.
It's happened several times on Blockbusters, where the answer has to start with the chosen letter, where the contestant has given an answer starting with a different letter.
They then realise what they've done and put their head in their hands and have a laugh about it.

In addition, in the head to head on Tipping Point, they are not allowed to pass, so they have to make up some sort of answer, however ridiculous. Usually, to give them credit, the contestant knows it's a ridiculous answer.

Besides the word already chosen, 'sky', I couldn't think of much else which would have fitted, apart from 'face' or 'oven' maybe.

That's true but not something that springs to mind. It's more like a Catchphrase question

Unless the 'Tiger Economy' of The Republic of Ireland buggers up and the UK bail it out through the back door as in 2009 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...-bail-out.html

Even Brexit will make no difference to the links between the two countries
