Is that really a stupid answer? They've just got 2 names mixed up.

Wrong and stupid as Spurs and West Ham are such well known clubs

Only well known to football fans perhaps!

Yeah I think so, shows how peoples minds work under pressure and it made me laugh. Perhaps it might inspire Sir Lenworth to do that as an character if he ever revived his impersonating acts in showbiz again.

Bit of a humour bypass there mate, it doesnt go down well even in an institution like DS

There is always a presumption on popular quizzes that everyone is knowledgeable of football and failure to understand that many have no interest.

If a general knowledge quiz show ruled out using questions on subjects that many people have no interest in, I'm not sure their would be many subjects left to use.

The 'failure' here was on the part of the FM who seems to assume that everyone knows the nicknames of West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur football clubs.

One would hope that a contestant on a quiz show would have at least some general knowledge to play with. Whilst many may not know that Norwich are known as The Canaries, or Derby The Rams for example, the fact that "spur" is part of Hotspur should be some sort of clue.

In fact from this list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...United_Kingdom they're all pretty random except for Hammers and Spurs.

Tonight's University Challenge: Paxo: Give me the name of the Republic whose territory lies within the red outline (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...entered%29.svg)

St Hilda's: Uzbekistan? Paxo: Good heavens, no!

St. Anne's: France? Paxo:No, it's Kiribati!

How I saw it was that St. Hilda's (Geras) buzzed in accidentally with no idea so Uzbekistan was a deliberate nonsense answer.

France was not a stupid answer is it is a republic which had many overseas territories in the Pacific. It may have only been a slight mishearing of the question to assume that the question related to a former colonial power, though in this case it was the UK rather than France. (But I had to Google to check.)

Must have a look at the recording to see how she could have come up with Uzbekistan, see if any any other red lines. I could understand France with the various bits of French territory in the Pacific.

On Family Fortunes (back in the late 80s or 90s) they had

Quote:
“Name a tall bird?

Naomi Campbell.”

My first guess was France as well as it looks like French Polynesia which is part of the French territories (and the wording of the question was like a trap)

but UZBEKISTAN?

Sorry Adele

I went back and looked at the recording, the map only shows the Pacific so even more puzzled by the Uzbekistan answer. Would love to see or hear her explanation!

Perhaps the contestant was colour blind and transposed the land/water areas in her mind? She had got a number of difficult questions correct before that so she was no dummy..

That's why I would love to get an explanation, I can't see any obvious reason looking back at the map.

Must see if anyone has Tweeted her!

Recently on Tipping Point:

"In the musical, there were Seven Brides for how many Brothers?"

Contestant: "Pass"

Even if they'd never heard of it you'd think "seven" would have been a reasonable guess.

Q: According to Christianity, who was said to have been crucified at Calvary?
A: Joan of Arc.
Another gem from Tipping Point.

A Lot of quiz show contestants geography knowledge is poor, such as the woman on Pointless who thought The Netherlands was the largest country in Europe. You'd think they'd brush up on subjects which are common before making their appearance.

My memory of the Naomi Campbell question was that it was "Name a bird with a long neck?"

Some dumb woman on University Challenge a couple of nights ago thought St Paul's Cathedral had been destroyed by German bombs in the 1940s.

"93" would have been a better answer than "Pass".

Not strictly a quiz I suppose, but flicking round the
channels today I caught five minutes of so called
'Celebrity Catchphrase' and I have to say that David
Haye, Andrea McLean and Louis Walsh, have to be
the three thickest/dumbest/most useless 'celebs' I
have ever seen taking part in any of these things!
