Perhaps the contestant was colour blind and transposed the land/water areas in her mind? She had got a number of difficult questions correct before that so she was no dummy..
This was the explanation given by Val McDermid on twitter last night.

(Not that she was colour-blind per se, but that the colours were.... 'confusing'! Tbh this has happened to me occasionally, especially when the sea is represented in a dark colour))

On Pointless today, the contestants were asked to give "Countries what end with two consonants" and someone answered "Paris".

Firstly, Paris is not a country.
Secondly, Paris doesn't end with two consonants.
And to top it all off, the person who gave this answer said she had an A-level in geography.

The problem with Pointless is that you can't pass and sometimes people's minds just go blank. Paris was a particularly bad answer though.

I've got an A-Level in geography and that doesn't mean anything anymore.

I really can't imagine Alexander Armstrong saying that!

At least that does end with two consonants. So not quite as bad ... and Lapland does sound like it might be a country!

Goodness.

I hope they remained to be friends but the other girl certainly wasn't impressed LOL

Funny thread I remember years ago on a game show they played a piece of music and asked for the name of the composer. The woman took ages to think about it then blurted out 'Handel's Water Music! ' 'Yes' said the host, 'so who's the composer?' 'No idea' replied the woman

That contestant had even told Xander that she's followed her football team all over the World, ... mentioning Thailand!

The poor young girl (who had to go first after having to blather on about her Uni Geek Club) looked really upset at her brain freeze. Even if she's just said "Pass" at least it would have ended in two consanants.

Geography courses are not called "colouring in" for no good reason.

There is always a presumption on popular quizzes that everyone is knowledgeable of football and failure to understand that many have no interest.
On a similar note I vaguely recall a letter in one of the newspapers or tv magazines when The Simpsons were at the height of their popularity, saying it was wrong to assume that everyone knew of or watched the show as they (the letter writer) had never watched a single episode. The same can probably be said about most popular culture, for example I know hardly anything about Harry Potter as its just never appealed to me and I've never seen any of the films, but I appreciate there are some fans who have an encyclopedic knowledge of it.

Well, two written consonants, but only one spoken consonant.

Well that's reasonable. It's always the way with community singing that the majority come in late.

God save our gracious Queen!

That, and another contestant's answer of Greenland, were understandable mistakes. Both are very large regions of the countries with which they are associated .. Lapland is the northern most region of Finland and Greenland is an autonomous Danish territory, lest there be any confusion!

The funny thing about Pointless is the apparent lack of knowledge exhibited by younger contestants (same thing happens on Celebrity Mastermind). I'm often yelling at the TV the most obvious answer that would score mega points, only to find that only a small handful of this mythical one hundred people have even heard of, say, Black Magic Woman by Fleetwood Mac! Whereas the answer that scores the highest number of points frequently relates to somebody I've never heard of.

That's the generation gap for you.

Well, it all depends who they ask.

I'm much stronger on music from the 70's than music from 2016.

So something from the 70's would seem obvious to me, but may well score quite low.

I mean, if today was 3rd Jan 1977, and you ask me about music in 1937 I have a feeling I wouldn't do very well.

Feel sorry for the girl who answered 'Paris'. She will probably want to go into hibernation for the next 6 months. You just know that answer is going to follow her around for the rest of her life.

The look on her friend's face was priceless. You could tell she was extremely unimpressed.

and when I saw it on the DM they suggested England and Scotland as valid answers

I see that they have changed it now

Interestingly, Colonel Sanders was a "Kentucky Colonel", an honour granted by the state governor. It has nothing to do with the US Army. I found this out on Wikipedia today.
