Cost of Producing The Show?
FusionFury

Does anyone know the rough cost of what it takes to make the show?

Just wondered at what level does the ratings dictate it isn't a viable business option anymore.

I was just thinking about this myself after seeing the 20K "competition" and at £1.50 per call and including costs , they need 15000 idiots to break even, so obviously they need all the revenue streams they can get.

Also Im convinced that not many of the public are voting so that revenue stream isnt what it used to be

But I would love to see a set of their accounts

Channel 5 relies on advertising revenue for its existence. There is no evidence that Viacom is doing badly.

2011
Richard Desmond's Channel 5 is set to record the biggest TV advertising haul in the broadcaster's 14-year history, with revenue up 28% to more than £350m this year owing to factors such as the reality show Big Brother.

2014
Sky will sell advertising space on Channel 5 and its sister channels 5 USA and 5* after striking a £250million deal with owners Viacom

deleted..

a lot - and the day time live feed hasnt been a better revenue draw than the repeated cop shows c5 showed in the slots when they tried it last year briefly.
C4 also dumped it because it was better to show music videos on 4music by the end of the C4 era...

it is however a "draw" to the channel (even if people dont watch, they know c5 exists because of the media buss)... and as such it has "loss leader" value that means it may not need to be as profitable as it could be.

you can do a quick fag pack sum..

the main static "house" studio
the removable "outside" studio (used for evictions)
the use of the little studio at the other end of the elstree plot for bbots
the production room

the hire of many fixed cameras (the improvements in them mean they no doubt need less cameramen outside the task times)
some cameramen
some backstage runners (doing the maintenance & prop building etc)
a room full of production people (monitoring the camera feeds and adding "tags" to the recorded footage so events and chats can easily be found come editing) - the same room has the cubicle "bb" sits in when talking to the house / diary room
a few "admin" staff - although there are "shared" costs with the production company who do the same sorts of things for all the shows they make

most of those people are on "series contracts" as are the props & cameras
then you have the "presenting staff" who are likely only there for tv time and some meetings.. they will have contracts (and get rich because the rest of theor day can be off filming something else for someone else etc)

remember many of these people are going to be charging "professional rates"

and finally you have the bbots guests who will get a little money depending on their appearance fee rates and prob a car to pick them up from somewhere..

so you have a lot of people, many well paid... but you dont pay them all for every day.(one reason their pay is higher as they dont get to work all the time unless lucky!)...

its expensive.. live tv is expensive...

TNA is a good way to see how expensive things are... hence why they record as many shows as they can in a few days to last them a "few months" of tv

maybe Channel 5 but we are talking about BB and costs etc associated with it. Last night I got the impression that BBOTS were doing the twist live , but something happened for Rylan to hastily announce that it would be shown tonight. Seems to me they may be having production problems.

The costs of BB will be from the Viacom/Channel 5 budget and when they see a sufficient drop in viewing figures the advertisers will want to pull out and BB will end.

I entirely agree that there has been a panic reaction. Postponing the announcement will they hope boost viewing figures tonight.

I did wonder that myself, but we can't know for sure what was up. I think they had planned to go to it live during BOTS but perhaps something was kicking off in there they didn't want to interrupt.

its not the total numbers but how many of the right type of people that matter.

the figures could half, but if they had more of the type of viewers advertisers pay up for it would be more profitable... for a clue on how well a show is doing.. look at the quality of the advertiser. BB is holding up ok again... but it may well have lost some of the viewers that really dont matter.

This is a question I was wondering as well.

With bb you have say 10 week advertising revenue stream with one prize (apart from the odd task ).

With cbb there are millions paid out in fees with only 4 weeks advertising revenue .

I have concluded that endemol must sell them as a package so all the posturing about whether bb16 would happen was just to create a demand after the disastrous bb15.

What do you think

shows are sold with "options"

there are far more things going on than simple black & white metrics being talked about on this thread.

Not only does there seem to be more product placement than ever but they are even letting HMs come out with brand names which would have been edited out or overdubbed in the past. I think there is a lot of sponsorship income as well as the Lucozade ads.

It doesn't cost as much as you would think. They obviously have to pay the lease on the house itself, and that would include the studios for BOTS, camera runs etc. Then you've got cameramen, staff, production, presenters etc. The housemates themselves only get paid £30 each a day (at least they used to anyway), which is nothing. The biggest cost of any tv show is the actors and actresses...this can run into hundreds of thousands, but for BB they don't have these costs to pay. They'll be making money from the advertising revenue obviously, then they'll be the Lucozade sponsorship, competitions (although I doubt they make much from competitions). For a tv show, it probably doesn't cost that much to make.
