Can we all now agree that "normal housemates" was a rubbish idea? |

Well said OP. From the recent poll on this forum, a lot of the BB viewers on here are older, middle-aged people, and not the tweenies that Channel 5 always seemingly want to aim the show at. Because of this, they all seem to want a more "mature" BB, but I have to say, it just isn't working at the moment. None of this lot are very interesting, plus Aaron and Nick's voices do my head in. We need more drama, more fights-that's why the last three CBB's have all been very good, CBB13 especially, which was bordering on excellent. Ordinary people worked way back when the show was young, fresh and exciting-and only half-an-hour long-but, in the modern era, they're just too tame. The modern incarnation of the show is just too tacky for them. Thanks a bunch for ruining the show, oldsters.

It's not the housemates that I don't like - although I do dislike some of them, but that is inevitable.
It is the constant messing around with the basic principles of the show, like passes, nomination twists and showing everyone's nominations to the house. |

The highlights shows these days are set piece edits for the most part.

The HM's aren't the problem, it's the show that is the problem. You wanna know why viewing figures are down ? it's the constant meddling. Last year made people switch off, this year is suffering for the joke of a series we had last year.
Big Brother. If you want a good series then leave it to evolve naturally. |

BB has always started in May hasn't it?
BB1 began in July, bb12 in September; BBs 2-8 started in May, though usually quite close to the end (25, 24, 23, 28, 27, 18, 30). The rest began in June. Quote:
I much prefer "normal " people. Otherwise you end up with wannabe "promotion girls". I'm thoroughly enjoying this series.
I don't think "normal" and wannabe "promotion girls" are the only possibilities. In any case, I think it's more important to have HMs who are interesting to watch than to have "normal" ones. The most "normal" HMs this time (Jack, Harriet, Chloe) are among the worst.

And evicting Simon without a public eviction vote. I don't know why anyone would think things were unfolding naturally this year, or without interference. BB has been meddling since the start. |

I can really see how the ratings might be down this season because of last season...
I almost didn't tune in this year because I'm sick of showing the diary room to the house, sick of twists, sick of putting ppl in part way through, sick of every game basically being a bunch of questions designed to make them upset or bitch, sick of a lot of that stuff. I was delighted this year when it started off with a more average bunch, and a less interfering approach, in fact, the only bit i didn't like was the bloody timebombs on opening night. |

I don't want to see normal people if they're as boring as some of them usually are. It's not Surprise Surprise... Some normal housemates are entertaining/funny enough but when they're unlikeable, bratty, horrible etc. like the likes of Jack and Harriet I'd much rather have a model who was a bit of a bitch but entertaining or just generally anyone entertaining regardless of their background, social standing or job.

The producers should use DS as guide of what NOT to do to appeal to a mass audience.
You wanted "normal housemates". Then complained they were dull, not entertaining, not rowing enough, not engaging. You didn't want "rows". Despite the most recent CBB delivering explosive viewing and ratings, you were sick of the arguments. Yet without them, ratings have basically collapsed and the producers have sunk to a desperate 4-way eviction low. You want "back to basics", but watching things play out without interference has been about as interesting counting grains of sand in the Sahara desert. Seriously, DS is wildly out of touch with general viewing tastes and expectations for this type of reality show. I hope they raid a local mental ward for the four replacement housemates and never rely on DS for a sense of viewer perspective again. Have you learnt your lesson? |

Let's face it the reason this year's ratings are down (right from the start) was because of the last season. I wasn't going to watch any more but have been dragged back in by a friend!! Many people I know who watched before aren't because of the way it was obviously fixed for Helen too much last time out and therefore wasn't a level playing field. Also many have given up on the fact that the nicer people seem to get vilified by fans of other hms.

I disagree with the OP. I was enjoying the 'back to basics' approach and the 'normal housemates'. This is the first non-celeb series I have committed to on C5 and appreciated all the nuances and clever edited we used to see on C4. Now, with this twist, I'm not so sure...

I love Nick as well, so I'm glad for the twist because he's been saved. |

I'm 26 and i hate this crap they are doing, i would love to go back to the way it was. You should be thanking the older viewers of BB. If BB lost it's hardcore fanbase it would have been off the air years ago. Us who have watched it since the beginning haven't ruined the show, we have kept it alive.

It's not the Hms it's the meddling that has people switching off.
I'm enjoying the more ordinary people this year, but hate that nominating and nominations mean b****r all any more |

theres only a few so called normal people in there
dullest housemates since that early bb , bb are wise to eject 4 of them just a shame its only 4. there's only a few in there with personalities. jade illeen. harriet. the rest need to see the wizzard of oz . good idea to get rid of some .it was poor casting. the only people in there capable of making a good show. are jade. the older vampire. and the mouthy chav harriet. and maybe sarah if she had better people around her. the rest have no personalities and need to see the wizzard of oz.. total bores they ruined it casting the two awful boring twins. they must of ran out of twins to get those awful bores in. and then picking 3 kids for the show what were they thinking,. agustus gloop.. david camerons love child and a posh nose touching bore. add to that some dull good looking people you got a bad show. yoda needs to go he sounds like yoda and talks his unwanted words of wisdom. he acts like a 80 year old man. that guy alone will stop anything happening. he acts like he is 85 not 30. poor casting |

On paper most didn't appear normal hm's and some aren't many have been in the media. They just don't work together.
But there's many reasons it's not worked I don't think starting in May has anything to do with it, it always used to start then, many people are away in August when it's on it doesn't matter when it starts or finishes there's always going to be something affecting if people can watch sports events bgt holidays etc I think many people struggle to have an opinion either way on the housemates this year I don't particularly like any of them but I don't really dislike any of them either. The highlights show is just so poorly put together, no consistency, not enough of the hm's getting to know each other, I don't feel like I know them properly. It feels like we don't get too see enough of what's going on it can be very bitty |

CBB is a different show entirely, though - it *needs* tension and arguments immediately because there's only a couple of weeks.
BB lasts months so the viewers need to actually care about the housemates - which means loving some and being thrilled when they're saved and getting furious about their most hated staying. The same flashy twists that'd be fine in CBB don't work here. |
