Okay, I have quite complex thoughts about this.
I will be completely open about the fact that in the last couple of years (last year especially) I haven't been especially happy with the way that Big Brother has gone. My opinion is irrelevant to how it was back in the C4 days - I actually only started watching around 2008, which is commonly regarded as being past the golden age, and I've watched at least some of every series since. I've seen quite a bit of BB1 on YouTube and I love it, although I realise that it can never go back to how it was because regardless of what the producers do, the Housemates are more aware of the cameras now.
I think it is important to be vocal about what you dislike about the series, because if you're not clear about that how will the producers know? Having said that, I try to be very fair in my criticism of the series - it annoys me when people complain about everything, so I try to be clear on here when I'm enjoying something. I actually never watched Live Feed so I'm not one of those people who constantly complains about that, though I would support the idea of bringing it back because I think that many viewers would really enjoy it, and it would increase the popularity of the series hugely.
This series I have been enjoying a lot, though there are still things that I'm not enjoying. I find the producer interference stifling, though not as stifling as last year. Last year I stopped watching about halfway through, just because I was no longer enjoying it at all. This year, although the twists are still frustrating, the editing is better and they have the best selection of Housemates there has been in years. I'm genuinely really interested in the friendships between them, which is more than can be said last year. I'm dreading this week's quadruple eviction, mainly because I don't see why it's necessary at all - the dynamic in the House is interesting enough without having to do that. However, I think that it won't necessarily be the end of the series - if it carries on how it's going, it could still be one that we remember fondly.
Overall, I think that I disagree with the 'accept it or stop watching' mentality; I will stop watching if it gets bad enough for me not to enjoy it - I have a couple of issues with this series, but so far they aren't severe enough for me to switch off. Maybe this will change, last year I was pushed not to watch anymore. However, I will say that no matter how bad Big Brother gets, I will always give it another chance the following year. I think it has a really good format and although declined ratings will take a long time to build up again, this is something that can be achieved with a lot of perseverance. I think that at the moment, the best way to do that is for the producers to consider what Big Brother is about. If the show is about a group of people in a House together, show us a group of people in a House together. Yes, manipulate their surroundings and intervene at times to spice things up if you need to - I don't mind them doing that as it provides a bit of variation, what I mind is when it gets to the stage where it seems that the producers are overstepping the mark, trying to completely dominate the relationships between Housemates and/or force a certain result in evictions. It frustrates me that they're still doing this, but I take some comfort from the fact that it is nowhere near as bad as it was last year, and if it has improved this much, there is room for it to improve in the future.
I don't care how it was in the past, I care about whether I'm getting what I want from it now. I watch Big Brother for the simple reason that I absolutely love observing people and how they react with one another. If the focus of a series is on that, I will be happy. If, as happened a lot last year, there is so much emphasis on changes to the format that all dynamics between the Housemates are lost in the edit, that is something I will object to.
