You are right about the further attitudes, but by and large it's all geared around fear and hate. I would ask you...what did Joel do to make anyone feel he's actually homophobic?
And if you'd say they are automatically homophobic because they are Christians then I'd say you're wrong, but that's your extremely narrow mind coming to an extremely narrow conclusion.
