What do you think is the likely hood of the new who doctors on screen together for the 60th, or even some of them?

I know there is no cast iron guarantee of a 60th special, or that it would be multi doctor, but since we know the show will be on air till at least three years beforehand, and that multi doctor is traditional for anniversaries, I think it's safe to assume it's a strong possibility.

I only say new who doctors because I think they are the only one's who could believably be viable options to return (except mcGann, but they didn't believe he was an option to put in the main episode 2 years ago, so he'd be even less likely in 8 years).

Anyway, this is just a fun thread to speculate if anyone's interested.

Here are my thoughts based on appearance then and potential availablity/willingness to return. All just my own wild speculation.



For me I think

Chris Eccleston:

Appearance: He dosen't look so different now to when he played the doctor so I think he could get away with believably still playing the role.

Availability/willingness wise: Although there is a chance that age and time could mellow his position, I'd doubt he would change his mind on returning.

David Tennant:

Appearance: To me there seems no huge difference from parting of the ways to day of the doctor, to now. Admittedly he looks more fresh faced in his first appearance but there is nothing specific that seems noticeably older about him. That being the case, I really doubt he will dramatically age in 8 years in such a way that would make him unrecognisable in the role when he has barely aged in the last 10 years.

Availability/willingness: I have heard about saying that he wouldn't reprise his role again for another '10 years or so' due to returning too much, so presumably that means he wouldn't return before the 60th, but I'd be willing to bet that if he is fit, able and available, he'd be signing up for the 60th itself as soon as he got the call.

Matt Smith:

Appearance: Could be a little tricky, being so young in the role means he has the potential to look noticeably different more than any of the others, being that he hadn't already aged as much as them when he first took the role on. Then again he might be fine, I thin he's the hardest to say for.

Availability/willingness: Again he is the hardest one to judge on this subject. He wasn't a fan before he took the role on, and whilst he fulfilled all commitments the role demands during his time, I never really got the sense that he saw it as anything more than 'just another job'. Plus, if his film career takes off, he may well be unavailable.

Peter Capaldi:

Appearance: Given that all indications of the crew suggest he is planning to stick around for a while, assuming he stays for another 2-3 years, he won't exactly have had a lot of time to change much in appearance.

Availability/willingness: Obviously there is a chance, however slim, that he could still be the current doctor. Otherwise, Given he, like Tennant, is a lifelong fan, and given the way he is dealing with fans and generally acting like he is in his dream job at the moment, I really couldn't imagine a scenario that he wouldn't return if he was able.

New Who Doctors?

No sir, ALL 13!

William Hartnell:

Impossible. Unless we're talking clever CGI, archive footage or David Bradley as William Hartnell as the 1st Doctor.

Patrick Troughton:

See William Hartnell, only replace David Bradley with Reece Shearsmith.

Jon Pertwee:

See William Hartnell, only replace David Bradley with Mark Gattis.

Tom Baker:

Depends on his health. Probably unlikely, given he'll be 90 but I wouldn't rule out another cameo from the great Baker.

Peter Davison:

I think he could be possible. Surely the 5th Doctor has to return in the series at some point after the excellent Time Crash?

Colin Baker:

Out of any of the Doctors, he's probably the least likely now given how he is thought of less favourably. Although his I'm A Celebrity appearance could go in his favour.

Sylvester McCoy:

Could happen but depends if the showrunner during the 60th is a fan of the JNT Era.

Paul McGann:

Likely, given the success of Night of the Doctor. But he's still a relatively unknown Doctor to the general public.

John Hurt:

Probably depends how busy he is. I never expected to see John Hurt appear in Doctor Who before Day of the Doctor as I thought he'd be too busy but who knows?

Christopher Eccleston:

Very unlikely, given how much he hates the show.

David Tennant:

A absolute cert, given his deep fanboy love for the show.

Matt Smith:

Extremely likely, however his Hollywood career could get in the way.

Peter Capaldi:

See David Tennant.

Groan. Not this crap about Chris again. He doesn't hate the show he just didn't like how things were run in his time on the show. He likes it when kids refer to him as the doctor and he even took time out of his busy schedule to help a fan propose. That sounds like someone who really hates the show (&#128530

His absence in the 50th anniversary special is well noted by fans.

If you can't bother making a once-a-decade appearance on a show, then how can people be expected to believe that you like the show and/or the role?

(Especially when you were necessary in order to finish connecting the regeneration dots and especially when you had been out of the role for almost a decade.)

Eccleston - no chance.
Tennant - will be in it
Smith - would say yes I would imagine
Capaldi - he would be in it

In the meantime have S9 and the 2015 Christmas special to enjoy at the end of the year.

But he took time out to read the script before passing on it. If he hated the show so much as some fans seem to think surely he would have passed on doing it before even reading the script. I really don't get this whole fan entitlement crap that because he had to be there because it was a special anniversary. Remember to him it's just a job. A job he has no commitment to return to. I wonder how many people that work on a job but left because of a bad experience would come back if they got invited back for a special anniversary? Probably not a lot

I doubt he actually read it. Knowing Eccleston's hatred for the show, he probably did a Bill Murray and showed a complete lack of respect for the writer (in this case, Moffat) by shredding it.

He probably made his mind up before any script or meetings or whatever. Remember 'Never bathe in the same river twice'?


The thing is, he didn't even do a special 50th happy birthday message. He could have at the very least recorded something for Behind The Lens instead of doing nothing.

Tom baker once famously didn't return for an anniversary special and now look at it him. I would say that Chris's non participation in the 50th anniversary doesn't have any bearing on what the future may hold.

Re the CE comments above.....personally think they're cobblers. Would a professional actor have a couple of meetings and then make a decision, or just go along for discussions for no reason whatsoever? I mean, get a grip...

I think some fans seem to think that actors sign lifetime contracts when they accept the part. It must be hidden in the small print somewhere...

He could have at the very least provided a 50th Happy Birthday message. He couldn't even be bothered to do that.

That's for the 10th anniversary, not the 50th. And I don't think the 10th had a big enough celebration. I think there should have been a big multi-Doctor Easter special; I suppose all we can hope for now is a episode of series 9 to be multi-Doctor or the Christmas special..

No not at all. He had no longer any commitment to the show therefore didn't need to do anything regardless of whether or not he was the only one not to do anything.

The other Doctor actors contracts' had expired also but they still did something. Eccleston showed no respect to the fans or show like all the other Doctors did.

Not going to happen. And considering how recent the, quite rightly, big 50th Anniversary was, personally think making a fuss about the 10th Anniversary of C21 Who would've been a big error. The non hardcore viewers might well have thought Oh get over yourself! Give us some new stuff!

Funny you should mention that because RTD was asked to do something to mark the 10th anniversary of Nu Who but he declined. Guess he must be hater too now… (rolls eyes)

Tom Baker had been in the role for 7 years (1974-1981) and he had only been out of the role for two years, (1983) when the 20th anniversary happened.

Eccleston had only been in the role for 1 year (2005) and he had been out of the role for 8 years when the 50th anniversary happened. (2013).

Comparing Tom Baker's non-participation considering his epic length of time in the role and his brief sojourn away to Eccleston's brief time in the role and his epic sojourn away is nonsensical. They are completely different circumstances.



That said, while Eccelston may like it when kids call him The Doctor and while he may remember the role fondly, he, as you say, has no commitment to the show. Commitment is what we give to the things that we love, to the things that we treasure and wish to keep close. As you said, he has no commitment to Doctor Who.

Eccleston treats Doctor Who like the girl that he dated and discarded, but remembers fondly, whilst Tennant and Capaldi treat Doctor Who like the woman they love and have wed and from whom they never wish spend a day apart.

Oh get over yourself Dalekbuster. Get real. Wake up and live in the real world for once.

At least try to understand that Eccleston owes you nothing. Please move on. Your constant bleating over this, Captain Jack etc etc is getting very tiresome.
