Continuation of: Three 4G Rollout | Free 4G for ALL!

I was watching the Mbro - Norwich one and I was wondering what sort of backhaul EE have to the stadium? From what I've heard it can cope with the demand of the sheer amount of people using their phones at once, where as St James' crawls to a halt when there is a home match being played!

Fancy stadiums might go for a DAS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_antenna_system - I think the likes of Verizon and AT&T routinely install them in stadiums in the US, so undoubtedly the likes of Wembley have one (especially if EE are a sponsor)

Wembley would presumably also be really easy to get tons of backhaul installed at

You see this is the advantage of supporting a second rate Championship team. 40-50mbps on Three 4g there. o2 on the other hand doesn't have 4g there and their 3g doesn't work. Although it's slated for the 3g improvement program.

Backhaul wise it's got to be strong but it's also got to cope with sudden surges, like when a goal's scored or during half time.

Went to see Newcastle play man utd at old Trafford over the Christmas period and was able to heap some rare praise on three when I was able to uses my phone with ease on 4g whist other members of the group struggled with O2 and my other half had no data service at all on EE, she was still on her T mobile 3g contract then so might have made a difference, three was also better then EE last year when I went to Silverstone & Rockingham race track, usable speeds and no problem with calls and texts, whilst my mates on EE struggled to send texts and snail pace data. That said, can't see 5mhz of 800mhz 4gb that three will be using holding up that well at these events!

So no signal broadcasting from the mast at the end of my street was just there neither on EE or Three signal broadcasting. works look like its happening. Can already see a new ugly looking mast been put up. 5 vans of uk power networks there too.

Should not going 3 4G any day now.

Which part of London?

I have 2 maintenance schedules in in my area in March - April which actually deteriorated my singal and now there is another planned maintenance for the 02nd June.

Your signal level doesn't really matter as long as you have some. When they do make changes it can be to fill gabs, but it can reduce signal level for people in other areas. It is quite normal not to have 5 bars and is expected / designed that way.

I should have mentioned that speeds also went down for me on 3G.

I'm going to miss this ends on June 8th. 2/3 bars in Manchester and Max I have seen is 3.4mb/s, usually 2mb/s which is so much compared to my broadband 400kb/s!

Same!

Exactly - there must be some serious backhaul in there. Three crawled to a stop on Monday, but EE was fine. You'd think somewhere like that would be somewhere they'd invest in.

NW London, around the Edgware area. They have been upgrading a lot of masts around here lately to 4G finally, still the damn town centre has barely any coverage when EE have full 3G and 4G coverage.

The mast near my house did a speed test there coming home tonight at about 11pm, got above 60Mbps, highest ive ever seen in Three.

The mast on the other side of the street must have gone 4G already as only ever got around 40Mbps when this mast went live about 3 weeks ago.

Will be on the other side of the street tomorrow so will see if it actually went 4G.

Three coverage checker says no more work is planned, although roadworks.org state work is still planned there until 1st June.

Maybe upgrading backhaul.

I've noticed on roadworks.org when it states "T-Mobile" it seems to be a Three network upgrade, but what about when it says "Orange PLC", does that mean EE only or Three aswell?

seems they've just changed the colours but it isn't working properly on all postcode searches.

They should have this fixed soon enough hopefully.

So went past the new poll swap on other side of street. That's one ugly mast, like the old orange masts not like the slim Three and T-mobile masts that you may still seen around. It doesn't go directly into the ground anymore but rather into an ugly fat box at the bottom.of it.

Same thing at the new poll swap they did a few weeks at the the mast closest to my house. What's with these ugly new masts mbnl are putting up.

Its so unsightly.

Out of curiosity, I called in to the local 3 shop and the very nice young lady showed me their intranet coverage map and... A new mast but it still doesn't cover my house. Not shown on 3's web site yet - on top of the water tower, Pelham Road, Cleethorpes.
Outside is a weak signal but there, inside nothing. Just have to wait for 800MHz.

Only 3/4 mile away, so close yet so far.

Do you have a Home Signal box? My Three coverage is similar. I can just get signal if I am lucky if I hold the phone against the window but elsewhere in the house it's impossible. I pestered them for a Home Signal box as I have decent broadband speed & it's transferred the use of the phone as it works all round the house now.

In and about Ayrshire there has been a noticeable slowdown on Three in built up areas. They promised 4G last year and it never happened. Wasn't included on the list for 2015! About time they pulled their finger out

It's slowed down everywhere, I had hoped it might improve with the teathering changes but nothing has so far, just think what it could be like next year if around 11 million more smart phone users from O2 have access and realise you can use mobile Internet when your actually mobile..

Yes im quite sure there will be technical problems for both networks when that happens (subject to shareholder and regulatory approval).

4G would help alleviate some of the congestion in my area via the mobile network but if there is a capacity issue elsewhere then there will still be problems. Last year some forum members had been going on about how Tethering restrictions would be the panacea for congestion issues

No that is NOT what was said, and average speeds have risen, despite the limited 4G advancement and rising normal user usage eg: handset data, streaming. This is in part due to kicking off many of the extreme heavy users who were using huge amounts of tethering.

The only thing we didn't anticipate was the disruption to the 4G rollout plans as a result of the talks and plans going on in the background to aquire O2. Had we seen the original planned 4G rollout combined with the restrictions it would have been exactly as stated.

I have access to UK Sell through data which accounts for around 40% of the total market. The numbers below are extrapolated using a propitiatory model I've developed in order to account for the full UK market. Of course that means it's not 100% accurate but I believe that it provides a general overview of the market in the UK.

Code:
UK - January Smartphone sales (Sell Through at retail)

396k - iOS
977k - Android
115k - Windows
44.4k- BlackBerry & other

1533k- Total sales

UK - February Smartphone sales (Sell Through at retail)

393k - iOS
1060k- Android
123k - Windows
54.0k- BlackBerry & Other

1631k- Total Sales

UK - March Smartphone sales (Sell Through at retail)

437k - iOS
1505k- Android
135k - Windows
53.4k- BlackBerry & Other

2131k- Total Sales

UK - April Smartphone sales (Sell Through at retail)

389k - iOS
1805k- Android
93.8k- Windows
63.9k- BlackBerry & Other

2352k- Total sales

Someone mentions Silverstone - Had nothing on F1 raceday on 3 last year, all day. Calls texts or data. Only when we got several miles away from the circuit did my phone actually work again!

Anyway, on a side note, last day on 3 for me tomorrow - going to EE. Endless dropped calls in this area so it has to be done. I'm self employed and it's costing me money, frankly. Some 2G fallback will be lovely!

Thanks as always for the figures jabbamk1.
iOS and android sell through is about what I would have expected, with android sales on the increase as products like the S6 launch.
I don't completely understand what has caused the windows/BlackBerry & other to perform like that however. Is there anything obvious I'm missing which explains it?

I was at Silverstone in March for the half marathon. Presumably not quite as busy as F1 race day, but still many thousands of people there. I don't know if they've done upgrade work in the intervening period, but I was able to make calls, send texts, access data etc. I made a FaceTime call and was able to access Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.

To be fair, on F1 race day, all the networks tend to fall over! 125k+ people in there. Some years it's better than others.
