haven't they already rolled this out to big cities? if so then it won't need a future ios update
If you are referring to SuperVoice (VoLTE) on iPhones, a carrier update from Apple will be required. It is assumed that it will come with the new version of iOS, but it can be pushed anytime from Apple.

The difference is if it comes with iOS 9.2, then it will be applied as soon as the user upgrades to the new version of iOS. If it comes as an individual carrier update then it has to be triggered somehow, for example, connect to iTunes or go to General > About.

yes correct, carrier update pushed by 3 and not an iOS update pushed by Apple

I've come into the thread somewhat late and am about to rejoin 3 so trying to get up to speed with developments. Their online bod obviously doesn't know

I really hope for Three that this isn't a major let down. I can just imagine downloading this carrier update and BOOM!!!! Nothing happens, signal is no better.. What a disaster that will be for Three. I just hope the power is cranked way up! Not long to wait then if it's mid December.

That's exactly how it is for me.

Well I ain't too far away from you so I assume mine will be the same. If that is the case then I'll ride out my deal until June then jump ship! I really did have high hopes for this 800mhz.. Have you reported lack of signal to them? Perhaps it's just a fault they haven't picked up?

I have complained to them many times. They always say there is a fault and eventually I get a text or email to say that the fault is now fixed but nothing changes.

Despite being in an area that is 'superpumped' and according to the coverage checker I have excellent service of 4G indoor and out, the signal is very weak.
Today and yesterday have been particularly bad with lots of occasions when I had no signal. I have given up complaining now because it achieves nothing!
If my signal does not improve greatly by the time my contract is up, then I will be leaving 3.

The first two years I was with them I had a decent signal but something changed and I don't know what that is and I don't think 3 can work it out either.
I have several phones I can use to test the signal and all give a poor signal.

I did have two contracts with 3. The other was for my wife. I cancelled it because of the poor signal. I stuck with them because of the 'all the data you can eat plan'. It was a mistake doing that but it's too late now.

If I was a rich man I would take them to court to terminate my contract with no charges just out of principle.

That's sounds really bad! Yeah I think I'd be jumping ship I'd i were you to. I'll be joining you I imagine. I think Three are hanging out for the O2 deal hoping it gets the green light. I'll wait with trepidation for the carrier update. As long as I can make a calland send a text I'll be happy! Is that too much to ask? I don't even need data at home as I'll be on wifi.. I only ask for the simple things..

I use 800 daily as I don't get coverage on 1800/2100 from and I have to say it works very well on calls/texts and data

I can only hope I have the same luck Skippy... Do you have full bars on 800mhz? Or just a few? I only need a reliable signal for call and texts!

Usually 2-3 bars I've been in places with 0-1bars and it's still very useable

On 800 I regularly get 20-30mb down and 5-10 up. I think when three realise how many handsets use 800 regularly they will have to increase their rollout plan to cover more sites for capacity reasons. Currently I think they only need a thin layer of coverage as fall back. Hence why it's a slow handset rollout, I think we can see a full mast rollout of 800 eventually. BUT three may have to sell their 5mhz 800 bandwidth as part of the merger and maybe 10mhz of 2100, if not it'll be interesting to see if 3 use o2's 2100 for 4G

Answer from The Three Blog to my questions. Really not sure about the 98% assurance but there are two answers now in the blog saying the iPhone update will be "by" mid December:

@Anthony – Hi Anthony, we’re working to enable customers with iPhone 6, 6+, 6S and 6S+ devices for VoLTE by mid-December 2015. We’ll let you know once the software update has been released. We’re still aiming to have 4G coverage for 98% of the UK population by the end of this year >Rory

Working hard to hit a date it isn't quite the same as we promise by then...

Just a note because I'm sure some will claim it was 'promised' later.

I just wish they would be honest with their coverage maps.

My area is blanketed with superpumped 4G, but it hasn't.
It is very hit and miss, mostly miss.

Not even blanket coverage of normal 3G and 4G.

30Mbps on 800?? Are you sure that's 800?
Theoretical absolute max at 5Mhz with 1 cell, 1 phone and no interference (oh and strapped to the mast) would be 37.5Mbps.
This is total carrier throughput. Add in all the other stuff and overheads I would imagine 20-25 would be absolute tops.
10-15 would be more normal.
Mind you since no one on here can't even get on it and you can, maybe you're correct!!!

Same here.

I honestly think the coverage checker is what will be there. It's too far ahead I think.

They have enabled very few masts I think.

There have been quite a few days when the coverage checker has said there has been works being carried out on my transmitter but nothing ever seems to happen to indicate any improvements.

I've seen some band 26 on 5FDD carriers tests from sprint that are around 30. It's possible but rare. When access is so restricted on three it's not impossible I'd say.

You did that just so I'd have to look band 26 up on Wikipedia didn't you.
Good call!
Yeah, hence my last sentence. No one on here seems to actually be able to get on it.
Skippy knows something we don't.........

Does anyone know any tricks for forcing the phone to connect to 4G? I find if I'm in the car and I'm connected to 3G streaming music or something, I'll likely stay on 3G even if 4G is available. Similarly, if I'm connected to 4G and then make a call (hence reverting to 3G), after the call the phone usually continues on 3G, with no way (that I've found) to get back onto 4G?
Any tricks or tips? (without rooting)

ALL handsets when switching down to 3G during an active connection will stay on 3G until it's idle again.
My iPhone 5 and 6 did/does this. It's normal, all networks do it. When priorities are 1800=>800=>2100 then it won't be a problem anymore (not that it is a problem much anyway).
However once you end a call the handset should go right back up to 4G again.
Mine does this within 5 seconds every time so not sure why yours isn't.
Maybe it's doing some datery (great new word there) thing in the background although why after every call I don't know.
When it won't go back to 4G, try closing all background apps to see if one of them is using data.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try that. You're right it's not that much of a problem, but sometimes the 3G network is overloaded and won't even support music streaming, so that can be a pain.

Just stop the data connection long enough for it to return to 4G and then start streaming again.

What you'll find with 800MHz is that one bar will go on for miles and miles and miles...
