Three already have the spectrum, they just can't use it yet.

You'd hope it would be an instant switch on (flick of the switch type thing) given Three knew it was getting this from the outset, but who knows?

Do people feel now is the time to get an 800 4g phone, still running on iPhone 5 but it does everything I need at moment.

As I posted earlier, a small off-shoot of my town has just got 4G on 2100mhz so I think do nothing until you know for sure that the places you go to are definitely using 800mhz before you decide. And as it's not know when any place will be getting what and when, waiting seems to be the name of the game here. No other option. It might be many months before they 4G your area or longer. Seems pointless upgrading a perfectly good phone for something that isn't here yet. |

3 has 3G on 2100, but no 4G. they might later refarm the 2100 to produce 4G but aren't at the moment

EDIT: So far as I know? So it must be one of those for as I posted yesterday, I managed to pick on the Sandgate 4G signal from a line of sight position of Sandgate, Kent. Had a quick Google and found two THREE masts in that location both on 2100mhz. So it would seem I have assumed wrongly that those are the ones delivering 4G to that part. But it certainly ain't 800mhz as my phone doesn't do that. |

Well my phone does: 4G: LTE 1800, 2100, 2600MHz

You probably picked up 1800Mhz 4G which is the main frequency in use for Three 4G. |

If you plan on joining Voda/O2 then an 800MHz phone is essential for 4G connectivity. |

I am rather intrigued to see what happens with regards to compatible handsets and VoLTE.
I can see networks seeing this as a great opportunity to upgrade people, of course, but also an opportunity to access to people bringing their own handsets. If we look at Wi-Fi Calling, there are some major issues in terms of reducing choice from the perspective of a consumer. I am pretty certain everyone will want VoLTE, especially Three users, but many may still want the freedom of a 12 month (or 30 day) SIM only contract, using a SIM free phone they've bought from someone else. Will that be possible? |

Don't quote me on this but I think jabbamk1 mentioned this as a possibility Three would do this, however this was probably a year ago and plans change so this is unlikely now.

I've just checked and EE are definitely still using the part of the 1800 spectrum that they have to hand over to Three at the end of September.

Is there an (Android) App that shows the frequency you are connected to as I might do a walk this afternoon and find out exactly what is what? |

You can try LTE Discovery, it shows the correct info most of the time (though once or twice is has given me false info, showed network as O2 when it was a Three sim
).https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...iscovery&hl=en Looking on the Ofcom mobile mast map, I can't find any Three masts on 1800 in that area but there are a lot of Orange ones on 1800 - Are they old Orange masts now used by Three, but still showing as Orange> |

Three use 1800MHz for 4G and 2100MHz for 3G.
You won't be able to connect to anything else. So not sure what exactly you want to find out? All I can find on the Ofcom mast map for 3 are all at 2100MHz, so it can't be one of those. It was suggested up the page that 3 do their main 4G on 1800MHz but on the map in that area, the only masts using 1800MHz are listed as Orange. So, that was why I was asking for an App that showed frequency so I could take a walk to that area and confirm once and for all what frequency the 3 4G signal was using. If it is, as expected, to be on 1800MHz, then it's weird as all masts in that area on 1800MHz are Orange and not 3. |

All I can find on the Ofcom mast map
You can tell its rubbish as it still talks about Orange and T-Mobile when they're now EE for example - and old Orange masts that have been turned off are still shown. There are two newish masts relatively near me that aren't even on the site too. |
