Three 4G Discussion Thread (Part 2)

So, the "4G Super-Voice" network is available in my area.

Had a play around with a family members old LG G2 today. Found that Three support this device on their "Super-Voice" network, so I flashed Three android firmware and it turned out to be old KitKat firmware that obviously wouldn't work with the new 4GSV network (but was indeed Three branded). The phone didn't seem to see any OTA updates, so I used LG's official utility to update the firmware but it seemed to update it to a generic firmware. All in all, a good two or so hours wasted.

Hopefully soon though my Nexus 5 will receive a firmware update to enable 4GSV capabilities as some others in this thread have suggested could happen (why else would they list the device as compatible with their network?).

As far as I was aware, the G2 did not support Super-Voice.

If it's an original Nexus 5 I would think you might be waiting forever, it's more likely that only the newer Nexus models will be getting it.

Sounds like the InTouch 800 extended coverage is coming in March according to a post on Three's blog
http://blog.three.co.uk/2015/09/15/4...here/#comments

"We’ll be launching the full version to all of our customers in March, so there’s not long to wait"

Take that with as much salt as required.

Thanks, I though it might have been some sort of service or app from Three, not that.

I did much the same thing, although I did download the latest Three KDZ (Lollipop 5.0.2), which was released by Three in October.

It hasn't enabled the SuperVoice capabilities, but guessing that's down to needing a later OTA patch to enable the SuperVoice (if you flash a different KDZ to the native one for your phone, you won't receive OTA updates). Reading the thread about the G4, someone did something really clever with root to enable SuperVoice with the Three KDZ on a non-Three phone, but guess there won't be the interest for someone to do the same for the older G2.

According to their coverage checker they do now. It'd be nice is someone with a genuine Three branded LG G2 could confirm this, as I wasted a lot of time a couple of weeks ago, trying to patch my non-Three one

After a initial provisioning issue, I managed to get up and running with the trial of the new version of Three inTouch. I'm using it on the LG G2 (non-Three handset, so non-VOLTE).

It does what we hoped for, i.e. when I lose signal and the 800mhz 4G is available, my phone now connects to it, and the Three inTouch app indicates "4G" calling mode, as opposed to the "Mobile" calling mode when connected to 3G or 2100mhz 4G.

By switching my phone to LTE only, it's been quite good to see where the underlying new 800mhz 4G is around my neck of the woods. It's also shown me that Three are fibbing about it's availability in my village, although maybe one of constantly rescheduled maintenance periods will actually fix this and provide what they say.

It's proving handy to extend my data coverage, although it's useless for voice, as everyone struggles to hear me, but I have that problem with inTouch app even on fast wireless.

Is that version of inTouch available anywhere online as an .apk? Or is there a link to the beta group (like the one for the 'my 3' beta app on Google+)?

Good to see the LG G2 getting support. I mean to get another one as a spare as it's damn good for battery life.

I see Three are mentioning on the inTouch page on their website that

Quote:
“From March 2016, selected Android devices only* will be able to access our new 4G Super-Voice network by downloading the latest version of Three inTouch from the Play store. This should give you coverage in more places, even if you don't have Wi-Fi.

Unfortunately, we can't support Apple (iOS) phones with this feature.

*See list of devices which can get 4G Super-Voice using Three inTouch.”

There's something wrong with the link to list the selected Android devices, but hopefully they'll make it right soon.

I wonder if the non-Three G4 when coupled with TiT, will let you force 800MHz as you can on the Three-branded versions?

So to clarify, are we saying that TinT will get you 800MHz where you have a handset which supports VoLTE but does not run a 3 ROM?

e.g. In my workplace, I get no 2G/3G/4G from EE (and 3 when I was with them a couple of years back). However the 3 checker indicates much better coverage around here when I select TinT Test Device. Therefore there is a strong possibility that 800MHz is enabled on a mast(s) nearby.

So I have a Nexus 6p, if install TinT, I would stand a good chance of latching onto 800MHz and thus be able to use data/calls?

Now I know TinT is not perfect but would be better than literally nothing!

Yes, once you authenticate (as you do to get the Wi-Fi calling) using inTouch, you'll be allowed access to 800.

I don't know what happens if you exit the app, or force close it, but perhaps the app has to ping every now and then to say it's still running - and if that ends, you lose 800 access again,

It could make a big difference, although not so much until 800 is a higher priority than 2100 3G, or becomes usable on 4G 1800 too.

What happens if you go outside of the wi-fi range?
Gigabit

This will work without WiFi. It will have authenticated by WiFi initially I presume and then will authenticate again as soon as it can connect to any form of network.

You're probably right. But it's always nice to hope.

Though, I've been in touch with Three over social media and they are now saying there's no evidence of 4GSV being available in my area, despite checking the maps and there clearly being outdoor coverage and indoor coverage dotted around.

I'd like to see more about this TINT App being able to connect to the 4GSV network, though the csv linked earlier in this thread suggests it wouldn't work with my handset?

Code:
Google	Nexus 5
@{VolteEnabled=True; 1800Enabled=True; 800MBBEnabled=True; TINT800=False}

I'm not certain about this, but if VolteEnabled is True, and 800MBBEnabled is True, there shouldn't be any need for TinT800 because the phone is natively capable of VoLTE on 800MHz.

Except for the fact that provision on Android doesn't work like that...

He's right in the respect that the Nexus 5 does support (Three) 800MHz but it does not have support for VoLTE so will never be able to connect to it.

The hardware is capable of VoLTE though, so it wouldn't be impossible for Google to make it happen.

I don't believe a phone even has to support VoLTE, though the InTouch app does use data to transmit the call it doesn't need VoLTE support to work, which is why the same app works to make calls over WiFi or 800data.

That would explain the Three claim that many people would be able to access voice on 800MHz, even though many phones aren't VoLTE equipped by their SoC. Interesting times ahead.
