I just got a SIM Free handset from CPW - Samsung S7 Edge

Popped in my old 3 SIM and saw an option to enable VoLTE in the networks menu. However I went ahead and installed TinT. Low and behold, at my place of work where EE provides nothing ..... I had a weak (0 bar) 3 signal but saw a symbol I've never seen before - Vo)) LTE

It worked, I called 333 and was able to establish a call whilst still on 4G

I then uninstalled TinT and it still works ......

This is very exciting, however the signal is still too low as when I move further in the building it goes again. So ..... is there any way, on a SIM Free S7 Edge with TinT installed, to use/test the Band 20 (800MHz)?

If TinT is installed and "use 4g for calls" is enabled in its settings, then your SIM is allowed onto 800MHz (in my experience, TinT will only switch to "4G calling" mode only if you are on 800 - not on 1800)

But that depends on the phone, and it's very unlikely that 3 would let you use TinT over 4G on a phone that clearly does not need it, since it has built in VoLTE

When you installed (or if you reinstall) TiNT do you get told to reboot the phone? Did you get its own 4G calling logo in the status bar? Does it say "4G calling ready"?

3G speeds have become piss poor again in Conwy/Llandudno Junction. Can't even stream TuneIn Radio without it buffering all the time.
Seems Three is now ignoring me on twitter... Clearly stated that the issue was with 3G and this is the reply i got: https://i.gyazo.com/176b1d291004e726...e657340c78.png

Sent them another tweet saying the issue was with 3G and not 4G, have had no reply since and other tweets sent after mine are being replied to.

Actually want to leave at this point, shame i can't as i'm stuck in contract for another 18 months.

Slow (no existent in my area) 4G rollout, no attempt to resolve an ongoing congestion issue with a particular mast. Seems the only way to get anything done is to complain...

Breaking news, my little town in Northern Ireland has just got 4G from Three!!
Could not believe my eyes this morning when I took my phone out and it said 4G.

It seems to be 800 only?

I know the mast it's on, there was work done about 3 weeks ago to it, antennas replaced. Standing beside it now gives full 4G on band 20. Nothing on 1800Mhz at all, is that normal for when it first goes live? Literally happened at about 10am today.

(airplane moding gives me 800Mhz 4G for a while before it eventually realises there's 3G there.)

You could try reporting the issue on their site through the coverage checker, and also give their twitter support time. When i was with Three a couple of months ago, it took a day to got a response, and i also had times where i never got a response (funnily enough when i was complaining about awful speeds).

Has three changed their configuration recently?

4G 800mhz was enabled months ago but rarely switched to it, only in 1 room of my house where 3G was 1 bar. Even then it may only switch at the last resort and it would quickly move back to 3G.

Anyway, yesterday, no signal at all all day. Today I get home and it's locked onto 4G. This has never happened before.

If you had no signal at all yesterday it's likely they were upgrading your mast, so it's probably a local thing, and your mast now has 1800MHz 4G, so your phone selects it. Before you were probably on 800MHz from a further away mast.

That's one logical explanation anyway? It'd make sense

That's curious (and disappointing!) - I've got an S7 Edge from CPW (bought on launch day) and I haven't got an option to enable VoLTE in the networks menu. I also have TinT installed and no 4G option in the settings either!

I'm currently downloading at 3 Mb/s and the in touch 4g calling icon is still displayed. I can only assume that when going from 800mhz to 1800 that it remains active. When moving from 2100 to 1800 this isn't the case.

In my experience, if you're on 1800 then TiT won't do VoLTE, it'll move back to 3G if you make or receive a call. If you're on a phone call when it switches over it'll stay on VoLTE (even if you lose all 4G coverage and move back to 3G)

So should really be considered VoIP rather than VoLTE if it carries voice on 3G as well.

Have 3 suspended 4G rollout pending the outcome of O2 takeover?
The gaps are extensive and don't seem to be improving.

My iD sim will only let me use EE 2G (data stopped working on 2G), 3G and 4G but wont logon to 3s 800 MHz only the limited 1800 MHz net.

iD is cheap but 3 needs more 4G or free O2 roaming.

My brother has an S7 edge (SIM free), with a 3 PAYG SIM and he reports that he got VoLTE too - after the most recent update from Samsung (though he uses some custom ROM that is based on Samsung's). I don't know if he has 800MHz access - but if VoLTE is working that must be likely?

He says he sees LTE a lot more, and we live in an area where 800MHz is definitely the more common band (there's some 1800 but not much), so I'd say yes

So should really be considered VoIP rather than VoLTE if it carries voice on 3G as well.
Maybe, but it's a rather unimportant distinction

I have seen 3 4G in a few more places recently, so I don't think it's totally stopped. The rollout has never been particularly fast.

Unless your phone has VoLTE or you can use inTouch then you won't be allowed onto 800 anyway - and I don't know if 3 lets the MVNOs like iD Mobile use VoLTE (they barely support it themselves)

Is it normal for a Three mast to have 800MHz 4G and not 1800?

There is some work going on not sure how much though. Looks like 3 have activated a new mast close to me. New replacement steetworks pole was installed last month and signal is stronger in the vicinity. Not sure if the 800Mhz was also activated though.

I know of one place (Welwyn Garden City) that got full 4G coverage late last year, and the speeds are incredible, but that's about it.

4G is quite widespread, but nearly always disappears when going indoors. WGC is perhaps a notable exception.

800 around here looks plentiful according to the maps, but so far I'm finding that when I can connect the signal is so poor I can't even originate a call, and data speeds are so bad that speed tests usually fail - and ping times are in the thousands.

By and large, the service is good and 3G is of course pretty solid most of the time, but I assume all the 4G efforts must have been focussed away from the areas already given at least some 4G coverage. Until they come back and fill in more gaps in 4G, people will be falling back to 3G indoors for a long time to come.

EE has done a lot of that infill work and it really does show. 4G indoors (even 4G+ in places) is great, and they've not even officially turned on 800 yet!

I had an OTA update for my S7 Edge the other night, now I've got this option on my Networks menu: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qto8ffe4qu...ng?dl=0&oref=e

Does this mean I can use VoLTE on Three? Still no VoLTE option in the TinT app, though.

S7 is VoLTE capable so it will be native. They wont bother with compatibility with the app

Yes. You won't see VoLTE on TinT because it isn't necessary.

TinT's version of VoLTE is necessary for phones that can't do VoLTE themselves. The S7 can, so it doesn't need TinT.

Honestly, having it built into the phone is much superior to using TinT

So, I can bin TinT then and still get 800MHz VoLTE and data automatically (I don't need WiFi calling)? Thanks for your advice!

Sorry to be a pain - just one more query - I bought my S7 Edge from CPW, not Three, does that affect my VoLTE access? TIA!

I have just been to the one place in our office where there is no Three signal on my phone (at least there wasn't!) and hey presto - VoLTE appeared on my unbranded/SIM free S7 Edge, purchased from CPW.

OK, the speeds are not stunning, but it works and I can make calls fine. I'm one happy bunny!

You've already got your answer, but no, it doesn't.

I'm actually impressed that it is working. It's time the networks stopped saying "you need to buy the phone from us" to be able to make a damn phone call

The speeds will never be fantastic on 800MHz LTE - that's just how it is - it's really there to make VoLTE work. Better speeds won't come until 3 ever turns on 1800 where you are. I think I get about 10Mbps on 800MHz where I am (rural area), I don't know what the actual maximum is
