As I'm in St Albans today I thought I'd do another speedtest. Got 45 up and 14 down.

Not sure what mast but I was just over the road from the Harvest Mouse, which is round the corner from Sainsburys

Very good speeds in Fareham.

No sign of any cap here.

3 need to get a serious move on with 4G in the South West. VO2 are catching up fast and will soon overtake.

I work in London E14 Poplar area, just done a speedtest on 4G (3 bars of strength on iphone). Worst I have ever seen 0.84Mbps Down and 1.39 Up.

Turn 4G off and use 3G I get 6.86MBps Down and 2.37 Up.

It actually really doesn't matter though, when you call off 4G on Three you get DC-HSPA. People outside of these forums aren't as desperate for a particular symbol to appear on their phone, they just want usable data on their device.

O2 / Vodafone were always playing catch-up by investing in 4G where they never invested in 3G so they have a big catch-up budget, whereas Three have just steadily progressed year in year out. Even in 8 weeks you can see many new Three 4G sites on the comparison maps that were posted here.

However most never compare multiple networks or have multiple active sims, so it makes no difference, they just won't know O2 and Voda have got better as they won't have used it, all they will see if Three slowly plodding on a slow path of improvement.

Knowing O2 and Vodafone's stance on investment, they'll probably get to a point in the next year or two and then call it and scale down 4G investment, rather than continually investing year in year out like EE / Three have done for a decade and O2 / Voda didn't do with 3G.

Cell breathing causes so many problems on 3G, and 4G is desperately needed to relieve pressure on 3G - or else people will start to find that Three's 3G service is going to get worse.

It's one thing to have slower speeds, but nobody wants a reduced signal that means high ping times and timeouts/total data failure. I can live with low speeds (relatively speaking - say 2-3Mbps) but not those times when you have no data at all.

There's also the increased battery drain to take into account too.

And, as people keep saying, the point of 4G is more capacity - especially in congested areas - and it means not having to deal with cell breathing. 4G800 also means great rural coverage.

It makes a huge difference for me. Without my home signal box, my phone teeters on the edge of 3G signal - which means poor battery life, crap call quality and rubbish data performance. 4G800 + VoLTE (or inTouch) belts in here, and it's great.

So yes, I do want to see 4G appear on my phone. But not for performance reasons

You guys over-do this argument a bit, if there's some 4 in in the area that it already reducing cell breathing, 800Mhz Three coverage isn't looking too shabby these days and it is rolling out more every quarter.

I'd say that are just keeping pace with growth, I don't see any customer decline or much fuss about it outside of the few on these forums who trott out the same lines.

Do you work for Three to see the figures before the quarterly announcements?

Well O2 have a coverage obligation and CTIL are rolling out much faster than Three at the moment. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

It will be interesting, but don't expect all consumers to have 4 sims running to test each network, or to sit there analysing comparison maps. If their data works fine (unlike on 2G) and they're generally happy with the service then the fact that 1 network has higher speeds isn't going to sway the vast majority. If that was true everybody would be on EE, but we've not seen a big push towards EE in the last 5 years. .

I've never had great speeds on 3 4G, not when it was brand new and not now.

I think they are capping me. I don't care because I am about to leave anyway

Seeing as that Three do not support Visual Voicemail, I take it that the Voicemail Transcription on iOS10 won't work either?

Eleven months ago I took a 12 month 200 minutes/AYCE data SIM only plan with Three, for £17/month. The same plan today is £23/month - an increase of 35%!

If anyone was in any doubt that Three are killing-off unlimited data plans...

Yes, I accept that. To be honest, 3 3G is pretty damned good down here in rural Devon, only let down by 2100's failure to get in the pits or go through walls. I am a very light phone user and would be happy to buy an iPhone outright and put a 3 123 SIM in it if for 1 they would accelerate 800 rollout so my phone will ring and 2. they would do proper wifi calling and not the silly app.

I don't need blistering speeds. Just a phone that rings and usable data. I would say I have the second on 3 already but the fact is I still need a VOD sim for calls as 3 is just too flaky in any sort of valley or wood. At home I can use the app but to be honest, haven't installed it on my new phone as it didn't work all that well and I got fed up with the constant notifications.

Based purely on my own assumption, I'd say that at some point the AYCE plans will go - or be bumped up in price so much that only a madman (or woman) would sign up - given it's handset only and there's only SO much data you can use, unless you've found a way to tether without detection.

I suspect the 30GB plan will then become the top plan, and of course that will be shared with your tethering allowance.

If that happens, it will still be a very generous allowance of course.

I think AYCE still exists because Three has built its reputation around it (no bill shock, although EE can promise that too merely by having a hard cap) and doesn't want to suffer the negative publicity from everyone - not just me!

It can possibly keep it going knowing how much data people really use despite having no limit, and just to continue saying it offers truly unlimited data, but eventually very few people will actually be on one of those plans.

Dont forget though that Three are giving you the first 6 months half price, so that package works out at £17.25 per month.

I signed up to 30GB for £20 per month, but works out at about £15 per month after the offer.

I would imagine the carrier update is to support users on the public beta of iOS10 - I'd expect another one at public launch too.
