iPhone 5 did quite a lot of bands for 4G/LTE but was being designed whilst Europe was still debating and hadn't launched any networks. EE and Three in the UK, and a network in Germany that have 1800 4G are suitable.
The iPhone 5 was the first iPhone to support DC-HSPA the 3G/UMTS speed enhancement and this has only really been deployed in Europe in any big volume.
Yes, the iPhone 5 was targeting the US just started LTE market - and since the 5s was only a year later and supports a _LOT_ of LTE bands, it shows the antenna development at Apple was underway and not finished. iPhone 6 supports an insane amount of LTE bands in one device.
