Did some digging with technical team (as I did the big revel on post 640 didn't want to be wrong!). This has all been switched on today. The Samsung S5 and mini handsets should have been sent the updates and the LGG4 has slipped to the 15th Sept. The new coverage checker is live but only if you put in Samsung S5 into the compatibility box. Then you get the new coverage maps.
Anyone out there with an S5? I've got friends on 3 with an S5 but not sure whether they are branded or not. Will try to test tomorrow, if not I'll just have to wait for the G4 update, only 5 days though. |

I also wonder how Three are white/black listing access to 800MHz. Do devices which aren't registered on the voice network get access to 800MHz say a tablet, and then devices are checked for VoLTE comparability eg an S5/mini.

Anyone know which version of VoLTE that Three are using there is normal VoLTE which uses 3G HDVoice but I've also heard Full Band VoLTE being banded around which is meant to be far better quality. I expect it's the former but with how they have delayed the rollout of VoLTE figured I would ask.

I have a note 4 and a S5 both unbranded, can anyone confirm or not if the S5 will be able to be used on threes 800mhz 4g or will they both remain 1800mhz 4g indefinitely??

Who knows what they are doing. I have a Nokia Lumia 930 which they never sold but its compatible with voLTE and 800Mhz. They shouldn't pick and choose which customers get it or there will be many complaints.

Hold on.
Are you saying that ONLY if the handset supports VoLTE then only the user will be able allowed to connect to the 800Mhz network? I would have thought the WhatsApp and other similar apps route calls over the data network. I have been able to make calls from the underground station in Central London over the VM Wifi using an application called localphone which allows me to make calls over 3G, WIFI and also route calls using 03/03 numbers. The people here might know what they're doing but the average customer is fairly dumb, and they'll think signal bars = they can do everything |

So if I put a SIM in a MiFi or tablet (data only) then will I be allowed access to 800? Will it be on an IMEI basis, as against a blanket activation for my account? Or will they only be activating mobile broadband/tablet SIMs for 800 access?
(there is something transmitting in 3's 800MHz allocation but it doesn't show up on a network search) |

They're likely just covering themselves - they don't want the complaints and potential legal action from customers in a situation where they can get 800MHz 4G but not 3G for voice, and no VoLTE

Went around Guildford today with my Moto G LTE. Just the same manic low power 1800 as before.
Also visited the Wonersh Seminary site which recently got EE/3 4G and is listed to support 800, 1800, 2100 and 2600. The new panels have six feeders, so three inputs ie probs 800, 1800/2100 ans 2600, though there was only 1800 and 2100 receivable. EE 4G was 70/40, 3 4G was 7/7. Gawd knows why 3 was so slow, the site covers practically no-one, the signal was collapsing as I left the site! Panel: https://www.flickr.com/photos/461414...posted-public/ |

I really don't understand how 800MHz access is determined. I just swapped my sim from a LG G4 which couldn't register on 800MHz, into a Moto X 2014 which definitely isn't VoLTE compatible yet, and the Moto X registered on 800MHz. Go figure

Is there a way to force an S6 to 800? The codes posted earlier don't appear to work...

No sign of 800 here though my postcode is on the list as coming soon, but something has changed in terms of 4G speed - whereas previously (I last tested a couple of days ago) I could only ever get about 5-6 down and 3-5 up in a particular place (my lounge), its increased today to being consistently between 35 and 42 down and around 10 up. More backhaul being turned on in preparation for extra 800 traffic?

What if I have a Galaxy S5 and flash it with the Three ROM. Will VoLTE work then?

Theoretically, you might need to change the CSC to HG3 too

So they aren't controlling access by IMEI?

Think I'll pick up a Galaxy S5 on Three and see if the network is working.
No luck forcing 4G on my Nexus 5 - not really a surprise but somebody mentioned the Moto X so I thought I'd try. |

If a phone has a signal it must be able to make a (cellular) call. The networks (all of them) have their reasons for this but that's how it is. 800 will run at full power (as far as we know) so it will in many cases go outside the 3G coverage footprint and in this instance any phone with no VoLTE will show a signal but a call will not be possible. |

"4G coverage in WF1 1DE on Samsung Galaxy S5 Good service. You should be able to use the internet in most instances on our 4G network. Indoor signal strength may vary. Galaxy S5 is compatible with our 4G network. |

I can't see 800 and Supervoice when I check my home, but it was on the maps with the earlier URL hack. I guess it's because it's coming soon here, so not showing on the 'live' map.
I don't get told it's coming soon though. It seems only people who don't have 4G currently get told the good news that it's coming. All in all, it's very confusing right now. But we can't really complain as Three has so far said nothing to clarify things. |

As far as how they will filter the handsets this will almost certainly be done in IMS using the HSS (Home Subscriber Server).
It can be done using IMEIs as an IMEI can identify the make and model of the device. They will create a whitelist of allowed devices and all others will fail to register. Currently that whitelist contains just the S5 it seems. They can also check if it's a Three handset. This is how EE block non EE phones from using WiFi calling I think. RAN Man will shout at me if I'm wrong.....
