Not really suprising as its Apple lol Double standards as the vast majority of compatible Android phones wont ever get to use Three's Volte. Ridiculous how Three will be giving a OTA update for LG G4 Three branded phones but wont be for unbranded LG G4 phones.

Users need to dissociate what's Three's fault and what's Google's fault.
Please show me another network which has given unbranded android phones an OTA to enable VoLTE, as far as I know the only slight exception to that rule is the Nexus 6 and T-Mobile/Verizon but even then the Nexus 6 has carrier specific builds so it debatable whether it is unbranded or not.

It may not be Three's fault, but VoLTE and compatibility really sucks. To rely upon carriers and manufacturers to work together to bring VoLTE updates is something I see only working sort of ok in North America where it's much less common for someone to have an unbranded device (not to the consumers advantage though). You often see devices sporting AT&T/Verizon logos.

It seems like another way to force consumers to get on contracts with carriers and not be able to use the full functionality of the device if they put it on another network (VoLTE stops working). I feel as if the way VoLTE is implemented was designed for the American market but gone global.

Remember when it became illegal to carrier unlock your device in the U.S.A? If they could sell you a device without a sim slot that you could never change network on they totally would.

On the other hand, you have Apple who have somehow worked out the issue with their carrier updates working across all their devices, Apple don't allow carriers to brand their devices, so updates must come directly from Apple. All we need is for Google and Microsoft to implement the same sort of method so that no matter what rom a device is running, it can receive carrier updates.

I do want to continue to use Three, so I might just buy an iPhone 6S, and then by the time I get another Android device I'd hope this would be all sorted.

Thee In Touch may be updated next year to do VoLTE, but I have to admit I'm considering an IPhone for a number of reasons, currently on Android.

It seems strange getting Three in Touch to work over 4G may take until next year. If anyone remembers Skype on Three I assume it worked in a similar way, and it worked perfectly. I guess that was much simpler but it always seemed pretty advanced for its time for me.

I'd update inTouch to work over 4g data for non VoLTE phones then give the option to manually enable 800 on your account overriding the VoLTE requirement if you sign a waiver saying you understand the risks and what it means or agree to something.

Then again Three might be against that because of how flooded it would get with data.

Is there a reason why this isn't more of a software thing?

I have a phone that can do 800MHz 4G and its CPU/radio manufacturer says is VoLTE capable. Android is supposed to do VoLTE. Why, then, can't I do VoLTE on any network? I presume the RIL or whatever is capable as the same chipset is used in phones that are capable.

It is a software issue as mupet1000 explains very well above. If you have a look at this link even though it is old it contains a lot of settings for VoLTE and I don't expect much has changed. The problem is how do you get those settings from the network to the unbranded phone and test it, it isn't exactly easy.

That's the thing, the phone doesn't even do VoLTE on the US networks. Its bigger brother from a different manufacturer has VoLTE support on a few US networks.

Therefore the phone would appear not to be able to do VoLTE at all, even though the hardware would appear to be capable (and its cousin can). So is this something Google can resolve themselves?

But I can see the "VoLTE provisioned flag" thing like others on actual VoLTE phones can, plus "enable SMS over IMS". So I don't know.

Skype on Three seemed to work by using the app to set the number you wanted to call and then calling a fixed line number that connected you to that number. A bit of a bodge, although it did work most of the time.

Im heading in the same direction with this. Google have totally failed to sort this out on Android. They have pretty much dealt a killer blow to their own Nexus devices. What the hell are they thinking? To not see this coming is gross negligence on Google's part.

A lot of people with smartphones can't even understand the difference between 3G and 4G to be honest as long as they get a usable signal to make and receive calls plus a working Internet connection.

If they can't get 4G, I don't think they would in the slightest care bothered as the 3G footprint is extensive anyway, a hell of a lot better than O2 and VF.

So for people wanting to possibly have access to 800 without VoLTE if they had the waiver option knowing the risks involved, the opt in figures would still be relatively low due to the fraction of people who actually understand what 800MHz 4G actually is and the benefits of it (and also the fact Three are the only network to ramp the power of 800 upto maximum strenth).

Like I said most people can't even differentiate between 3G and 4G so they probably will have no clue what 800MHz or VoLTE even is. That's just how I see it anyway.

I don't think a waiver could work. Far too confusing and the network would still end up in the shit if there was a situation where 999 didn't work.

But for now, Three should be allowing blanket access for MBB accounts. That is unless Three really doesn't want people using data on 800 over 3G.

IPhone users on the ios9 thread getting a Three carrier update after downloading the new software. Anyone here getting that and does it bring forward the end of October update?

Three isn't in a position to dictate when Apple rolls out a carrier update, so will probably keep quiet until it happens - then issue a release.

Any dates with Apple are subject to change, so it's safer to say 'coming soon' or give a more distant date.

The iPhone getting VoLTE will boost the numbers significantly, so Three will definitely want to make a big deal of it.

I'm now on carrier 'Three 21.1' on my iPhone 6 Plus. Doesn't seem to bring any obvious changes.

On my iPhone 6 now updated to iOS 9, I can change the APN and MMS centre details which I could never do before on Three. It shows up under 'Settings' > 'Mobile Data' > 'Mobile Data Network'

Carrier version is 'Three 21.1'

Would be fine if every delay was to make sure the final roll out was totally problem free. Yet every update there are increasingly not just minor issues but massive ones.

Strange I have Three 21.5 on my iPhone 6 Plus.

Yeah Three's 3G coverage reaches more of the population than O2 & Vodafone but vice versa for 4G. Three's 3G may cover more of the UK but it is a lot worse for signal reception, case being for me in Glasgow there's lots of places where i get poor signal especially in buildings which is due to Three's 3G being on 2100mhz frequency. My mum & brother in the same buildings will get full bars 3G good signal with O2 due to it being on 900mhz frequency which is alot better than 2100mhz for getting through walls.
