Doesn't look like Three 4G covers the Meole Brace Retail Park in Shrewsbury as I could not get a 4G signal at all. Although just before getting into the Retail Park my phone managed to pick up a weak 4G signal if I forced the phone to LTE only but it didn't give me alot of speed though, presumably as the signal was a little weak.

The Three coverage checker doesn't show any 4G at all in Shrewsbury (closest place is around Telford), if you picked up any 4G there, it's probably been recently activated and will show up on the map soon, and hopefully more sites will be 4G'd in that location now that the rollout has started there. Unless it's a stray signal from Telford...

Not sure, only reason I posted about it was because pepstar mentioned it. So I thought I would check it out. I did not get a chance to test 3G in town centre though.

According to a friend, 3 4G has made its way to Shrewsbury's Meole Brace area! Also, he has noticed in the Shrewsbury centre area he's regularly getting 20mb+ 3G, where he would previously get between 1-5mb.

Three 4g like EE's 4g really doesn't travel that far at the moment as the power levels are so low, it's unlikely to be from Telford, in my experience with the live masts on 4g if you have 2 bars of signal your really not far from the mast, less then half a mile or if it's a high up mast a bit further but you have to be line of sight, if your ever in Telford and want to see what I mean travel from the Trench end of the A442 up to the town centre there are 2 live three/EE 4g masts here roadside along the short root, on both as soon as you are not in line of sight the signal falls to 2 bar or less and can even go back to 3g in between them, so you might find its close by but obstructed in some way.

The mast that's been 4G'd in Shrewsbury is at the top of Oteley Road - here!

This is very true. In Morrisons yesterday I was about 80m from the mast, it was on the building next to me, outside very strong 4g, go inside and dropped down to 3g. It's an old building but the moment you go out of line of sight it's instantly down to 3 or 4 bars on most masts. Interestingly in the Trafford Centre they seem to have turned the power up a bit since I was last there, full 5 bars pretty much throughout.

.. or the threshold for dropping down is set high so that as only some sites have been 4G'd at the moment they don't try and take on too much traffic and only switch when there's a very good 4G signal.

If you search manually (as I can do on my LG G3) you can easily use 4G, but when you select auto it prefers 3G unless you've got a very strong 4G signal.

Not many sites have 4G yet, it'll be like this for a while.

This was on both Three and EE I had both SIMs with me, I think it's on -128dBm for the QRxSigLev or whatever it's called. It covers a big area as well, I've switched on to it outside from a fair bit away. Two of the cells seem congested but one of them gets up to 80Mbps.

So the logic seems to be to restrict connection to 4G sites to maintain performance. I'm sure as more 4G sites are added they will allow more connections. I think they want to spread the load and not pile everyone on to a couple of 4G sites.

4G can handle more simultaneous users and data connections than 3G. But I guess if there's one site 4G'd and it covers are large area, it might get swamped with phones all trying to cling onto 4G from that one site when there's plenty of 3G cells around. You might be onto something.

Take my town for example, 2 x 4G sites, and I think around 15 x 3G sites. The expectation is higher for 4G as well.

Is anyone getting the message "Sorry - That link didn't work. What next?" for the Coverage Checker?

http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Network/Coverage

EDIT: Seems to be working again now.

Were you indoors at the time? I think in some areas you can only access the coverage checker when outside...

The people that fell for the 'delayed texts when certain words are contained' have all now stopped texting random words and timing it to go outdoors and check the difference on the coverage map.

More work being planned for my postcode for today.

I have had 4 maintenance schedules in the past 4 months in my area but no improvement in 4G at all.

Maintenance doesn't mean 4G at all, it can just mean.. umm maintenance. We all see plenty of this work happening from time to time. Not quite sure what they do as the site never looks any different, but I have had loads in my area.

I can't work out what's been happening of late but all around me recently I've had good speeds and then shocking speeds, with shocking ping times.

But, I wonder of its a backhaul problem because when Three has been bad, so has EE.

It's times like this that although there are lots of advantages to sharing backhaul they also share each others short comings at times too, there are several masts I pass each day which have really shitty backhaul. Speed less then 0.3mbps on three, my 1st thoughts when the problem looked permanent was to switch to EE. But was sad to find little improvement in the same areas so little point in paying the premium, Soon as cornerstones integration is complete we will effectively have only 2 main mast networks so this could become more common. Could be where a 3/O2 company could have an advantage maybe..

Mast upgrade taking place at St Quentin Gate in Telford town centre on the 27th -29th July, think it's a mbnl site, work listed under T mobile but is having a full mast replacement and cabinets added so a good chance three 4g could also be added here as EE coverage map shows a good 4g signal in the area already...

Looks like 4G from Three has reached Crewe, although I couldn't connect to it at all.

I take it you are outwith your contract? That's over 3 months notice. Typically its been just over 1 months notice.

Shhhhh.....

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...hee%20DATA.jpg

This shows average data use per month by all three customers. Average per month is now around ~30tb which is over 3.0GB per person per month average. Unlimited data users are using more than 5GB per month on average, the top 10% are using more than 15GB per month on average.
