Casually drop in the questions about 4G priority vs 3G and if handsets sold outside of Three will get VOLTE.....as you pour them another gallon of wine!

I am getting speeds of 50mb on the 800mhz cell. Am I correct in thinking this is because hardly anyone is using it yet?

Theoretical maximum with 5Mhz at 800 is 37Mbps.
This is not actually possible though since it sort of ignores overheads, just raw data with no one else on it. Fastest I've ever had on EE 1800 20Mhz is 130Mbps (rural newly activated cell with no one on it, iPhone 6) Half that (roughly) for 800 = 65Mbps. Quarter that for only 5Mhz = 16Mbps absolute tops!!! 5 - 10 is going to be the norm I'm afraid. It's your bits per hertz see!!

It's your bits per hertz see!! ![]() In theory it's really the same figure as what should be quoted for 3G (either 5MHz if you added MIMO or 10MHz dual carrier without MIMO). However with 3G the overheads tend to be ignored so you see 21.6 per 5MHz (which doubles up to 43.2 if you add MIMO or alternatively use 10MHz DC). This is the same figure as the ~37Mb/s that gets quoted for 4G. So 4G is more honest than 3G. ![]() In future these theoretical maximums will increase. If we get to 4x4 MIMO then speeds double. There's also the possibility now of using 256QAM modulation if you have a very good signal (instead of the current fastest 64QAM) which adds ~30% to the maximums (obviously this requires device hardware support). |

There are some overheads built in to the 37 Mb/s figure though Devon so under absolutely perfect conditions it might be possible to get very near to it.

The words hairs and splitting come to mind. Most are going to get 5 to 10, maybe 15 meg (on a good day). Not having a go. Just saying I wasn't getting as technical as you are. I do bow to your superiority, I just was making the point that 50 meg wasn't possible over 5Mhz 800. Kind of backing you up, although now that seems to have backfired.

Okay Devon. You are right too
![]() And I bow to your superior musical taste. I've just watched tonight's episode of Top of the Pops 1980 on iPlayer. Ottawan D.I.S.C.O and Russ Abbot guest presenting with Mike Read doing a Cliff Richard impersonation. |

O... M ... G... I'm off to see that now.
Thanks for the heads up!!! I had D.I.S.C.O on 7" single at some point. Had the French version on the B side. Remember B sides? I must have it somewhere. I'll dig it out.

I saw Rocky Sharpe and the Replays up the 3 mast today doing a bit of upgrading. Gave me a signed picture disc and a Brotherhood of Man tape.

I think I had Rocky Sharpe on 7". Where the hell did that go?
Got it in Zounds in Totnes. they had stylus cartridges and everything in there. That's when we dragged a diamond or Sapphire through a vinyl grove to make sound in case anyone was wondering. Oh wait, they are still doing that now as it sounds better than 1 million bit 17 zillion Ghz sampling.... |

Potentially this is getting a tad off topic! (However, "Bat out of Hell" was my seminal rock experience back in 1977 - I'm fairly sure they predicted 4G goodness in "Paradise by the Dashboard Light"!)

Some weird stuff is happening this morning. Was supposed to have maintenance on the 30th, nothing happened as usual. Just a few minutes ago I was browsing on 4g and everything stopped and I went to no service. After a few minutes I reconnected to 3g but with no data connection.
I'm able to get coverage from 4 different masts at my location, all 4g, yet it's not working. Airplane mode doesn't help, but if I reboot my phone I do get a 4g connection as normal for about a minute. It's usually super congested with highs of 6-7mb and is often around 1mbps. I got a nice 20mbps with -110dBm, I assume because its kicked most people off it. It actually kicked me off to no service during the upload portion of my speedtest. I did check and it's still broadcasting 10mhz. Same thing goes for the other sites in my area. There's maintenance planned on the 6th, but not today. |
