A little closer to the 800mhz mast now! I think this is the fastest it can give, but it's faster than the 1800mhz here! |

I'll know in about 15 mins. Just downloading. Not hopeful but the VOLTE possibility is only a small reason for me to try out 9.2.

Now on 22.5.2 carrier settings. 7 bars 4G, 1G downloads speeds, just downloaded the entire internet, or.......everything is the same. Three bars 3G when I'm in a very strong 800 area.

O2 Merger
So sky news are breaking that the o2/3 deal would require a spectrum sale? Fair? No, EE should also require the same given the amount it has!!

Problem is they don't have enough spectrum even if joined compared to EE or Vodafone. |

Not really the same. EE being bought by BT still means 4 networks in the UK. O2 and 3 merging means only three networks in the UK. The Sky article implies that to merge they would have to divest enough spectrum to make a replacement fourth network.
Problem is they don't have enough spectrum even if joined compared to EE or Vodafone. Edit... Or be exempt for purchasing any 2.3 when it comes along? |

Could they not just sell the 2x10 2.1ghz that say 3 or o2 have, I know is not as simple as just but with enough masts could 2x10 2.1 be enough for a consolidated network?
Edit... Or be exempt for purchasing any 2.3 when it comes along? |

Or handover there 3G network shared with EE to the bidder sky most likely! And stay partnered with cornerstone?

I think personally to make an effective fourth network these days they would need lowband spectrum if I was a betting man I would say they would have give up.
2x5MHz of 800MHz [Three's Block] 2x10MHz of 2100MHz [O2's Block] Maybe the 2x5.8MHz of 1800MHz [O2's Block] as well It wouldn't be a massive amount of spectrum but would be enough for any fourth entrant have a decent start up chance. Plus in 700MHz auction be allowed have a reserve block like Three was given. Perhaps even have give up the 1400MHz Three just brought but doubt that as its download supplement only. Perhaps MBNL could be switched to new entrant as well but think that would be too complicated but would make it easier for network sharing having O2/3 Merged company on Cornerstone and EE/Fourth Entrant on MBNL. |

Haven't EE got to lose some of their 1800 as well? Add that in and it would be worthwhile.

Still leaves EE with 45Mhz of 1800, which is a bit mental!

Orange and T-Mobile had 4x30 of 1800MHz, so 120MHz. They gave up 30MHz to 3, so surely it's 90MHz eg 2x45MHz

Now I forgot about their 1.4ghz that paired with 10mhz of 800 would give a pretty nice amount of capacity and speed. Or would it be best served with their 1.8ghz and lower the power to match 1.4?

I have changed my firmware on my S6 Edge several times. I can't say that I have downgraded though. The last flash was from UK provider free firmware to 3 UK firmware and the phone works fine.

The 3/o2 deal sees a network disappear. It's a real Apples versus Orange thing, completely different scenarios. |

As has been said, the EE deal just sees a change of ownership from FT/DT to BT, EE as a network will still be (virtually) the same.

Back to coverage, and the difference in coverage between 3's 800 & 1800 MHz 4G (assuming they are using common masts at present) is very noticeable. I know that 3 are on a few mountain top sites in Co. Tyrone (through their integration into MBNL in NI) and if they site 800MHz cells at full power here, some of those sites will likely give a 15-20 mile coverage radius easily. 30 miles might not be impossible.

While I think the three/O2 merger isn't a good thing for the mobile market, long term the EE/BT deal has the potential to cause much more damage to the communications sector as a whole by far, I can see the lines between fixed and mobile communications becoming more blurred as things move on and the commissions have been a bit short sighted just looking at the mobile sector in isolation. It's almost like we need the fixed line and mobile mast networks to be run by a independent body, all local phone exchanges open to competition to ensure no one company can have a strangle hold on the sector in terms of business and future development.

In saying that, BT still have their 2.6GHz "Niche Spectrum Ventures" spectrum it won at the 4G auction that could be made a condition of BT's buyout of EE to be sold to a potentially new "4th" network.
